Story
VELVET Available for Adoption Hi there! I'm Velvet, and I come with two standout features: a silky-smooth black coat that lives up to my name, and the most SPECTACULAR ears you've ever seen! Seriously, these magnificent sound catchers have their own fan club at the shelter.  My life's journey took an unexpected detour through the streets of Chicago, where I wandered as a stray, navigating city life on my own four paws. Those days are behind me now, thankfully! These days, I'm living my best life at C.A.R.E., where I've transformed from a trembling, uncertain pup to the unofficial Lap-Warming Champion of the Midwest. At a perfect 17 pounds, I'm just the right size to be your everything companion. Need someone to snuggle with during movie night? I'm your girl. Looking for a co-pilot on car adventures? My ears and I call shotgun! Want a walking buddy who matches your pace with perfect rhythm? I've been practicing just for you! I get along swimmingly with other dogs, and I've never met a human lap I didn't immediately claim as my temporary throne. Every morning when I wake up at the shelter, I think to myself, 'Is today the day?' – the day when someone walks in, locks eyes with me, and realizes we're meant to be together. Could that someone be you? I've been saving up all my best cuddles for my forever person! With hopeful wiggles and ear flaps,  Velvet  March 1, 2025, 10:11 am

Story
Ellie Sue is a super sweet happy chihuahua. She isn't for everyone so please read carefully before you apply to adopt. Ellie Sue will steal your heart. That being said, before you apply you need to accept 2 conditions. Ellie Sue has a cataract that requires eye meds. They come from the compounder and she needs to see the opthamalogist. The meds run about $50.00 a month and will be required for life. It is not optional it is a requirement to adopt her, Ellie Sue is also quite a vocal girl. She believes it is her job to let you know that the wind is blowing. If the other dogs are playing she sits on the sidelines and shouts out her cheers and excitement like a sports announcer. When you leave she likes to be the town crier and let everyone know. She likes to express herself with some obsessive barking. It isn't going to change. This is how she is. If you can't accept it, move on to another dog. She doesn't need to be tortured with someone spraying water at her or discipling her. We don't want her to go into a home like that. If you tell her to tone it down she will but you will spend all day doing that. So either live with it or choose another pup. Now, if you got this far and want to know about her, then read on. Ellie Sue starts out a little shy. But once she is feeling safe she wants to crawl in your lap and stay there forever if she could. She's not clingy or needy, she simply loves her person. And if you aren't around she would be okay climbing into a bed as sharing it with an equally nice chihuahua or similar mate especially on a cold day! She tends to like males a touch more, She thinks its always cold like most chihuahuas do! That being said, she is quite content to sit outside in the sunshine even on a chillier day. Having a nice yard to bask in the sun makes her very happy Ellie Sue is both pee pad trained and outside trained. She really likes to go outside but giving her the option especially in rotten weather is quite convenient, Ellie Sue is fully vetted. She has been spayed, vaccinated, had a dental, and microchipped. Her adoption donation is $500.00. She is on the hunt for her own completely committed family, Little dogs can live a long life so she wants to be sure all applicants will stick with her for better or for worse! We adopt in the local Chicago metro area. We require home visits, If you would like to apply to be considered as an adoption candidate to adopt Ellie Sue please fill out an application for her adoption on our website at: https://www.rescuetailsanimalwelfare.org/info/adoption We are all volunteers with full time jobs. We try to get back to all applicants within 72 hours. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to us at: RescueTailsAnimalWelfare@gmail.com. Story
Lucky is a senior needing an understanding home. Lucky is about 11 years old. He is timid but at first meeting he might start out like a tough guy, The tough guy is just his fear rising up and he wants to look and act like a big tough guy to protect himself. But what he really wants is to have someone hold him and love him to pieces. And even when he wants to act like a German Shepherd, he weighs in at 5 lbs and only has 2 teeth in his mouth! He needs someone who speaks chihuahua and they will understand him and his ways! Lucky's Mom went into a nursing home and the family couldn't take him. He was going to a high kill shelter when we intervened. Lucky biggest flaw is that he like so many male chihuahuas is his tendency to mark. He does enjoy going out in the yard if it isn't too cold outside. However he isn't interested in spending a lot of time outside as some dogs do. Lucky will us a pee pad although some times he misses the pad. He also may choose vertical surfaces because he will mark. So to combat this, he should have frequent potty breaks and wear belly bands at home. Lucky is a bit on the thin side so his family needs to be sure he eats high quality nutritious food. Lucky will do well in a home with a nice tiny chihuahua to sleep and hang out with. Lucky is neutered, had a recent dental, up to date with his vaccinations, He is heartworm negative and microchipped. His adoption donation is $400.00 Lucky is on the hunt for his very own completely committed family, Dogs can live to be 25 years old so he wants to be sure his family is all in for better or for worse! We adopt in the local Chicago metro area. We require home visits, If you would like to apply to be considered as an adoption candidate to adopt Lucky please fill out an application for him adoption on our website at: https://www.rescuetailsanimalwelfare.org/info/adoption We are all volunteers with full-time jobs. Story
Fannie came into animal control as a stray. She is a sweet and smart little gal about 2-1/2 year old. Our best guess is that she is a chug, a chihuahua pug mix. Fannie is an active dog who enjoys playing with small sized dogs with nice dispositions. She's smart and a bit stubborn. She loves basking in the sun and doesn't want to come in when called. She will be a good student and will benefit from going to training as will her family, Fannie is house trained and pee pad trained. That being said, all dogs need to learn a new routine and there will be some mistakes while the learning curve develops. Fannie is a vocal gal with a rather loud voice. If you are noise sensitive she is not the dog for you. Because she is vocal we want to see her placed in a home with a yard rather than a condo/apartment setting. Fannie is about 2 -1/2 years old. and fully vetted, She has been spayed, received age-appropriate vaccines, microchipped, and is heartworm negative, Subsequent vaccines are at the expense of her new family. She is on the hunt for her own completely committed family, Dogs can live to be 20 years old so she wants to be sure her family is all in for better or for worse! Her adoption donation is $600 We adopt in the local Chicago metro area. We require home visits, If you would like to apply to be considered as an adoption candidate to adopt Fannie please fill out an application for her adoption on our website at: https://www.rescuetailsanimalwelfare.org/info/adoption We are all volunteers with full-time jobs. Calvin and Hobbs foster are happy to share this info about them: Meet Calvin and Hobbs: the perfect pair of senior pups seeking their forever home! With Calvin, the spirited 10-year-old Jack Russell Terrier mix, and Hobbs, the toothless but cute, 12-year-old Chihuahua, each bursting with love and energy. Crate trained, quirky, cuddly, and leash-savvy, they're ready for walks in the park or cozy evenings at home (preferably under the blanket with you!) They are mostly potty trained when an established potty schedule is set in place, accidents seem to happen only when they stray from routine. They are very food motivated, so further training seems doable! Both would be best suited in an adult-only home with a yard to run around in. Calvin and Hobbs thrive when each member of the household shares in their care. While they can be possessive over "their person," equal time and effort from everyone ensures they reciprocate the love tenfold. Ready to add endless joy and companionship to your life, Calvin and Hobbs are eagerly awaiting the chance to become cherished members of your family. Quick facts The good: crate trained okay to be left home alone housebroken- if potty schedule is in ~4-5 hr increments spirited and playful, but will also sleep with you all day walks well on leash loves cuddles and food loyal and loving The not so good: dog reactive on leash (mostly Calvin) possessive over "their person, and will react if someone crosses into their person's space (mostly Hobbs)
