Please read the bio in full for answers to your questions. In the event you have a question that is not covered in the bio, please email info@seniordoghaven.org. If interested in adopting, please complete an adoption application which can be found at https://seniordoghaven.org/adoption-process/. Please note that because all of our dogs live in foster homes, we are unable to set up meetings with a dog unless we have a completed adoption application on file. Adoptions must be about an hour of Wilmington, DE in order for our volunteers to be able to conduct an in person home visit. MeetLula! Lula is a 9-year-old, 14 lb. Chihuahua who found herself alone and trembling at a city shelter. She barked out of fear and was quickly timestamped. We knew we had to help. Lula only required a spay and dental. Her biggest challenge has been learning to trust new people. Lula has a lot of love to give and needs only the right person to live her best life with. She needs to be the only pet in an adult-only home. Lula would love to live with a homebody that prefers a quiet life. We have to assume that she wasn’t treated with kindness in the past, so she is not a fan of strangers. Lula will bond fiercely to her chosen person though and stay by their side. (Or preferably in their lap!) Lula is fully housebroken and can also use a pee pad if necessary. She has good vision and hearing, has no problem with stairs, and loves to run, jump, and play with toys. Lula walks well on a leash but will bark and try to lunge at moving things. A quieter neighborhood or a fenced-in yard is ideal. Lula is very well behaved, so she has free roam of the house. Lula does struggle with resource guarding. She is very protective of what she feels is hers, including her person, and will bark and possibly snap if it is removed from her. Her foster family works with her on this, but her forever family will need to continue that work. Lula loves snuggling in bed and always has to have a toy with her. She doesn’t like rainy days and will cover herself with a blanket to make sure she stays cozy. Lula loves going in the car, running around, and is always good for a laugh. We know the right home is out there for her. Can it please be yours? Apply today! Our rescue is based out of individual’s homes and most of us have several rescues at once. Due to the fact that Lula needs to be the only pet, we would also be open to a fostering situation with an experienced dog owner that would enjoy working with her. In a fostering situation, Senior Dog Haven & Hospice would continue to cover her expenses. Any questions regarding her behavior or interest in fostering, please e-mail info@seniordoghaven.org

Adoptions must be within a reasonable distance from Wilmington, DE for our volunteers to be able to conduct an in-person home visit. Meet Matilda! Matilda is a 14-year-old, 5 lb., Chihuahua mix who was found as a stray and brought to a crowded shelter. Scared and alone, she really needed a new beginning.  Matilda was brought into rescue and given time to decompress. She clearly wasn’t treated well before, because she is very afraid of people and will sometimes shake and cry. Matilda’s new owners will need to be super patient. Her ideal home would have another small, low-energy dog she can take comfort from and play with. Matilda came in with no hair and underweight. She has gained a pound and a half and now has some peach fuzz on her head.  Matilda had several teeth removed and was also treated for parasites. She has good vision and hearing, can handle a few stairs, and gets along well with dogs and cats. Matilda does well on a potty schedule and also uses pee pads, but like most seniors, she can have an occasional accident. Matilda doesn’t do well on a leash at this time, so a yard she can explore would be great. An adult-only, quiet home would be the best fit for this sweet girl. Matilda needs a dedicated owner that will let her have her independence, while showing her life can be amazing. She loves to eat, and does happy dances with other dogs. Matilda simply needs a little space, and a lot of love. This tiny pup deserves only the best in her golden years. Can it please be with you? Apply today!

Adoptions must be within a reasonable distance from Wilmington, DE for our volunteers to be able to conduct an in-person home visit. Meet Arthur – Your New Best Buddy! Arthur is an adorable 11-year-old Chihuahua mix who weighs just 12 pounds, but his personality is anything but small! This sweet senior came to us from a shelter (likely from a hoarding situation) and has quickly become a favorite in his foster home. Arthur is now ready to find his forever family to share his golden years with. Arthur is a low-maintenance guy who loves naps, snacks, and exploring the outdoors. While he’s mostly housebroken, he occasionally has an accident overnight but has never peed inside. He’s crate-trained and settles in nicely after an initial bark or two. Though he’s independent enough to nap nearby instead of on your lap, he absolutely loves to be close to his people. Arthur has some vision and hearing loss, but neither impairs him much—he gets around just fine. However, stairs can be tricky for him, so he’d do best in a home with minimal stairs or someone to assist him. He’s a quiet pup who barks minimally (except when bravely protecting his home from deer, as his foster once witnessed!). Arthur is great with kids of all ages and enjoys the company of other dogs. In fact, we think he’d thrive in a home with canine companions, as he came from a multi-dog environment and lights up when he encounters dogs on walks. Arthur is also good on a leash, making walks a delightful shared activity. This little guy has had a rough start to life, arriving at the shelter with a rear mass (since removed), a URI, and limited appetite. Thankfully, he’s on the mend and is eating well, breathing a little louder than most but with no medical concerns identified. Arthur would do best in a home where he isn’t left alone for long hours—he craves human and dog companionship. He’s a chill, easygoing couch potato who will fit seamlessly into almost any family ready to love and care for him. If you’re looking for a calm and loving companion to share your home, Arthur might just be the perfect match. Could Arthur be the missing piece in your family?

Story
Oreo joined us when his family could no longer care for him. Oreo will require a little time and patience to adjust to his new family and home. He loves to sit on your lap, snuggle in bed and give kisses. Oreo loves to run and the yard and loves to play with other dogs. He does show some food aggression and also does not know where the treat ends and fingers begin so he should not be in a home with young children. AOL had Oreo neutered, vaccinated, HW & Lyme checked (both negative) and he is microchipped. Oreo is 4 years old, 10 pounds and crate trained. He does do well with pp pads but with multiple pups in the home sometimes it’s hard to know who is missing the pad. Oreo was an only pup with his previous people but he is learning that doggy siblings are fun too🙂 At this time we believe that Oreo would do best in an adult only home. If you would like to inquire more about Oreo please email us at AOLanimalrescue@gmail.com

Story
Introducing ACE! Ace is the place : ) Ace is a one-year-old, neutered, male who weighs approx 30 lbs. Up-to-date on vaccines and had his annual vet check at Stoneback Veterinary Associates in late March, housebroken, good with cats, grew up with kids and can live with a dog. Ace is a very shy and timid guy and will take some time to warm up but, once he does, he’ll be your sidekick.  He is going to need some training and socialization as puppies always do. Ace is quite the love -  if you are sitting, he is on your lap, wanting to cuddle. As far as we know he hasn’t been exposed to a lot of dogs, and will need time to transition into a home with other pets. His foster mom has two dogs and he seems skittish when they approach or if they try to initiate play with him. She feels over time he will gradually feel more comfortable. He will definitely need positive training and confidence building to make him a well rounded pup. It’s always important to socialize your puppy to many different things, so they can learn to adapt in a normal life. Ace is a wonderful soul who is looking for that right home who can help him grow to be the bravest boy ever. Interested in adding a little Ace to your family? Please fill out an application at www.companimals.org. Adoption $300November 3, 2024, 10:40 am

Story
Meet Bonnie! Bonnie is our longest resident at the shelter. At just 4 years old, she's got a long life ahead of her and she sure would like to live it on the outside. Bonnie originally came to us with her cohort, Clyde, and their puppies. As time went by, her pups all left one by one and even Clyde found his way to a new home while Bonnie waits for her next partner in crime. Are you someone looking for a sidekick or maybe even a frenemy? Bonnie's your gal. If you like looking out your window at passersby, spying on your neighbors, and making judgmental comments (or just giving side eye), she'll provide a snaggletoothed smirk and throw some Grade A+ shade their way with you. If you like snuggling on your own terms... well, then you're probably out of luck because Bonnie concedes to no one. But, if you're willing to agree to her terms, we think you'll find it's well worth it. If you can earn Bonnie's trust, her heart will follow. She'll be your ride or die and we have no doubt that she'll hold your heart forever. Apply to adopt Bonnie at www.angelsretreat.org.

Story
Meet the “planet” pups! Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Moons, Pluto, and Venus were all pulled as part of “Angel Retreat’s ACCT’s of love” program. These sweet puppies were scheduled to be euthanized due to arriving at ACCT suffering from Parvo virus. Parvo virus is extremely costly both financially and in terms of time required for round the clock care. Thanks to our donors, we have the means to give these dogs a fighting chance at life, and we are honored to step in and give them that chance. The “planet” puppies received the parvo monoclonal antibody injection as well as lots of love and supportive care and now have all fully recovered and are ready for homes of their own! Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Moons, Pluto, and Venus are all 2 month old Labrador retriever mixes who are full of happiness for their second chance at life! They will require a family up to the task of providing them the ample physical and mental exercise and training that all puppies require. If you are interested in being considered for them please apply on our website at www.angelsretreat.org 💕🐾 If you are interested in contributing to our “ACCTs Of Love” fund to help buy more of the lifesaving monoclonal antibody to save Parvo puppies please donate through the following links: Venmo: angels-retreat Our website: https://checkout.shelterluv.com/donate/arpa Learn more about this program: https://www.angelsretreat.org/accts-of-love/

Dot is a 14-year-old, 13 lb., Pomeranian who was surrendered when her owner passed away. She was suffering from Lyme disease and an infection from ticks. It was time for a new beginning. Dot came into rescue and fit right in at her foster home. She was spayed, has some masses removed, and received medications for the Lyme disease and tick infection. Dot is fully potty trained and gets along well with dogs, cats, and kids. She has good hearing but is partially blind. She walks well on a leash, handles stairs, and loves to be picked up and cuddled. Dot’s foster home is very busy and she has no trouble handling the chaos. Dot loves her people, but will bark at strangers. Her ideal home would not have new people coming in all the time.  If you need a couch cuddle buddy, then Dot is the right dog for you. She insists on belly rubs after breakfast and loves being scratched and loved on. Dot really enjoys walks, car rides, and basking in the sun. She also loves playing with toys. If you need a whole lot of love in a small package, please apply today!
