Story
Looks like: Chihuahua mix Female, 7 years old (estimated), 11 pounds The regal Duchess is ready to be pampered in a palace of her own, but could benefit from some time off her throne in order to achieve her optimal health. After living on the streets, it's no surprise that Duchess is relieved to just relax at home. We are confident that some nice strolls around the block will do her a world of good. She gets along just fine with other dogs (including the many dogs in her foster home), but she prefers watching dogs from a comfortable distance. Not a fan of rambunctious puppy energy, Dutchess appreciates creatures that are small, quiet, and as calm as she is. This sweet girl's dream is to find a sunny spot and a soft bed in a peaceful home. She is also looking for a forever person who will work with her on weight management, gently increasing her activity level. After being found as a stray, Duchess came to us from Hitchcock Road Animal Services.

Story
Looks like: Chihuahua mix Male, 6 years old (estimated), 8 pounds If you're looking for a snuggle buddy, you've found a perfect pal in Milo. This little ball of affection bonds strongly with his caretaker, so you know that with Milo by your side, you'll always be surrounded by love. This sweet little guy wants nothing more than to spend the day with you, whether that means being at home, on a walk, or on a road trip. Milo will always be ready to cover you in kisses. Milo can sometimes be anxious and vocal around new people or animals and can take a while to warm up to strange situations, so his ideal adopter will need to have some patience to help him overcome his fears. Milo may be happiest as the only apple of your eye, but he might also do well with another calm, small dog in the home. Milo came to us after his senior guardian could no longer care for him.

Story
Looks like: Chihuahua mix Male, 10 years old (estimated), 12 pounds This fun and active little dude is generous with his tailwags, is engaged, happy, and inquisitive all day long, and will provide undivided moral support to whatever you do. Cadbury loves to hang out with his people, snuggle belly-up on the couch, and soak up all the attention he can get. He enjoys roaming around the yard and going for brisk walks or trail hikes. On car rides, he is an excellent co-pilot, preferably taking in the scenery with his nose out the window. He can be selective about other doggy friends, and he will chase after and bark at cats and is thus looking for a feline-free home. We don't know yet how he behaves around children, but we assume that he will enjoy their company. Besides missing a good number of his teeth, Cadbury is in excellent health. His muscles are toned and his joints are creak-free. With his smiley face and beautiful rich chocolate-colored coat, this lucky little charmer has everyone around him swooning in no time. He is very much looking forward to being part of a loving household and to be your best buddy forever. Cadbury came to us from Hitchcock Road Animal Services so that we could address his dental disease.

Story
Looks like: Miniature Pinscher, Chihuahua mix Female, 7 years old (estimated), 9 pounds Darling Darby is ready to work her way right into your home and heart! Darby's favorite pastime? Anything you're doing! This incredibly loving little one is thrilled to join you for whatever your day has in store. Couch snuggles? Walk around the block? Running errands? She's happy to be by your side! One of her favorite activities though is joining you for food time! She gets along well with the other dogs in her foster home, both big and small, although she loves to boss around other dogs that will allow it! We don't know yet how she does around kitties or children. Darby has some ongoing skin issues that she is seeing a dermatologist for. They are likely allergy related. Due to Darby's medical needs, POMDR is offering a one time stipend of $1,500 to assist with future medical bills for your newly adopted dog. If you are interested in taking advantage of this perk, we can share more with you upon submission of your adoption questionnaire. Sweet Miss Darby joined us from an overcrowded shelter in Central California. We're happy to help get Darby the medical care she needs and to find that loving forever home to call her own!

Story
Looks like: Chihuahua mix Female, 6 years old (estimated), 12 pounds Princess Cleopatra (or Cleo for short) is ready to take her place on her throne. This sweet little lady adores finding a comfy spot in the home to take in all that is going on around her. She seems fascinated by the comings and goings of indoor life. This poor sweet girl spent the majority of her life as an outdoor only dog and has had some puppies in her previous life. We're happy to be able to offer her the comforts of indoor living from here on out! Cleo gets along great with other dogs, but we don't know how she does around kitties or children at this time. Cleo isn't accustomed to her people being around and interacting with her much. Being the center of attention can be a bit overwhelming when you're not used to it, so she just asks for some gentle pets and slow movements before being picked up. This sweet little lady joined Peace of Mind after her guardian was no longer able to provide the care she needed.

Story
Looks like: Rat Terrier, Chihuahua mix Female, 10 years old (estimated), 13 pounds Katara may not be a waterbender, but we would be happy to bend over backward just to see this little lady smile. Katara is a little pup with a big heart, and while we don't know her exact backstory, we do know that she's been working hard to relearn to trust people. But when she does trust you, she bonds deeply and wants nothing more than to cuddle you and show you love. Katara gets a bit overwhelmed by a lot of noise and commotion and other dogs invading her space. Her foster reports she gets along super well with the other dogs in the house, but does need to be fed separately. She also does not do well with children, and although we have not seen her interact with cats yet, we do believe she would do best as an only child in a quiet house where she can spend lots of time with her favorite human--you! Katara does have a chronic UTI that can sometimes result in urinary leakage. She's currently working on resource guarding and we're excited to show you the tools for her continued success! Her foster reports she is the cuddly and adorable little lady, who has plenty of energy, loves car rides, and is a superstar on leash! This sweetheart joined us from Hitchcock Road Animal Services after being surrendered to the shelter for being "too old." She's looking for a home where she can live out her golden years in peace.

MEET SAMSON! This little 8-year-old boy needs a home! Samson is a Chihuahua mix on paper, but could have some Dachshund in him given his slender nose and longer body. He's got the most interesting color patterns and floppy ears. Whatever his mix, he's cute. Samson is a bit sky & timid at first, but once he gets to know you he will be happy for attention. He gets along great with other dogs, though is more submissive so should not be with an alpha dog. He already had a dental and is neutered, vaccinated & chipped. Samson weighs 10 lbs. He would do best in a quiet home with a single person, a couple or a family with older kids. Please email for an application.

Story
Meet Figgy Pudding! This sensitive sweetheart of a chihuahua mix came into the Shelter as a stray along with some “friends”. A good Samaritan found him at the Watsonville Levee and coherced him to safety with some stinky hot-dogs. At the Shelter, Figgy was shy, avoidant and really overwhelmed but always made good choices (moving away and watching the world go by from a distance). Two dedicated foster parents opened up their home and have been observing his behavior for a little over three weeks. He has come a long way but will probably be more of the “wallflower” type of companion than a “social butterfly”.A key to Figgy’s growth in foster has been having a canine in the home. He tends to follow his resident canine foster pups around – looking to see how they interact with the world and people around them. Because of this, he is required to go to a home with a pup. After about a week and a half, Figgy started to enjoy being pet by two individuals in his current foster home that have become part of his circle. He is learning new people are no so scary by having people offer him little treats when they come by. Figgy has even started to dog – enjoying his toy, ripping them up and even playing with a ball with his foster parents. In new environments and with new people, Figgy has been been skittish and ultimately tends to retreat to safety (a crate and/or a familiar environment). With time, patience and the right guardian – we anticipate that FP’s world will become a little less scary and he will be someone’s BFF. Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Meet Fawn! Fawn came to the SCSPCA with several of her friends. They grew up in a ‘hoarding situation’, meaning they were living in a less than desirable situation with several other animals. Because of this, they haven’t quite mastered many of the skills and behaviors that one would expect from ‘normal dogs’. We certainly hope that these guys go on to live well-adjusted lives and thrive in their adoptive homes, but there are a few extra things adopters need to consider when it comes to adopting one of these very special miracle dogs! Fawn has been hanging out in a foster home, here is what they have to say about her: `Fawn is a delightful dog. She is at the perfect age, past the puppy phase but young enough to still be goofy and play. She is a very low maintenance dog. She is happy to go for a nice stroll and then nap next to you. She gets along great with other dogs. She did great meeting our family on Christmas and seemed to really enjoy getting to know new people (especially if they came with treats). She is very treat motivated which makes training her much easier. She is a quick learner in terms of what is and is not allowed in our home. She has a wonderful personality, full of love and goofiness. She would be a terrific addition to any home.`If you would like to hear more about them, please call or stop by the shelter during our Browsing Hours: Wed-Sun 11-5.

Story
Looks like: Papillon mix Female, 11 years old (estimated), 17 pounds Sprinkles is a true companion. She's happiest when she gets to be by your side. This sweet and gentle pup can take a moment to warm up, but when she does, she wants nothing more than to pepper you with kisses and love. This little ball of love just wants to be your furever friend. This sweet girl is currently overweight and has trouble getting around, both due to her size and possible arthritis. She is currently being evaluated to try and help her get her mobility back. Though she struggles with a lot of movement, she does sometimes get some short bursts of energy. Sprinkles is a very people-friendly dog. Before placing her in a home with children, we'd like to be sure all interactions were monitored and young kids were respectful. Sprinkles may do well as the only apple of your eye, but she may also do well with another mellow pup, especially as Sprinkles does not like to be left home alone. Sprinkles came to us from Sacramento County Animal Shelter so that we could help with her medical needs.
