Levi was picked up as a stray in Stockton, CA. One of his front legs had an elbow fracture that wasn’t attended to. The tendons were seized up in the fracture, so he couldn’t move his other joint either. The vets think he was probably hit by a car about a month before going to the animal shelter.
He wasn’t well cared for before arriving at the shelter, but he was still the sweetest dog - loving everybody. Because of his bad leg, he needed a rescue group to take him in, so the shelter called us.
Once he had his leg amputated, he became a whole new dog - loving the freedom of not having to lug around that useless limb.
Unfortunately, he has osteoarthritis in his hips. The surgeon thinks his previous injury damaged the blood supply to his hips. He needs to stay thin and active with low impact exercise. Luckily, he loves to get daily exercise! Watching him run around, you wouldn’t guess that he has hip issues. He will be need to on lifelong arthritis treatment. He currently gets monthly injections of Librela and Adequan and a daily joint supplement. No surgery is recommended on his hips at this time.
Levi loves going for walks and going jogging. He is leash reactive when other dogs are close, but when they are across the street, he doesn't react and has learned "look" to get a treat and focus on his foster mom. He currently wears a muzzle while out for walks for when a close encounter is unavoidable and he does well with it on. Levi lived with a large dog in his foster home for eight months and was great with him. He would do well being the only pet or living with the right dog with slow introductions.
Levi entertains himself with chew toys and stuffed Kongs when he's home alone and does well by himself. Fetch is Levi's favorite game in the backyard and the house and he is good about bringing it back and dropping it.
At home care is easy with Levi, as he allows ear cleaning, nail clipping, brushing, teeth brushing, monthly injections and getting a bath with no problems. He loves to cuddle up next to people on the couch and in bed. He has met a lot of strangers of all ages and does very well with everyone. Bikes, skateboards, canes, hats, etc. don't bother him. Levi is potty trained using a dog door.
Levi has shown some prey drive tendencies in the backyard, so he probably wouldn't do well in a home with cats. He also shows some barrier reactivity with the neighbor's dog, and is still working on that behavior.
If you are looking for a super sweet, smart, resilient dog and are up for continuing his training and arthritis meds, Levi might be the dog for you. He is also a great watch dog.
Please note that we don’t adopt any of our dogs out to homes with children under the age of 13.
