Story
Dog Name: Denali Breed: Catahoula/Pit mixSex: FAge: 3 yearsWeight: 60 lbs
Medical needs: Zero!
Housebroken: She does alert at the door, but sometimes she just wants to play it can be hard to tell what she’s up to…so we try to maintain a schedule to be sure.
Crate trained: Yes. She goes in without issue. Sleeps quietly and sometimes retreats to it for a nap.
Good in the car: Yep. She’d much prefer to be your co-pilot though. She needs a seatbelt
Good on a leash: Denali is currently walked on a martingale collar. This prevents her neck from being harmed should she decide to pull. Denali is short and squatty, so if she smells or sees something of particular interest, her instinct is to dig in and pull. She is pretty easily redirected and continued work on leash pressure will help her understand not to pull. She does seem to be exhibiting some protective behaviors so sometimes she needs a vibe check. In general, she walks well.
Energy level: Medium. Denali enjoys a good game of fetch and will also entertain herself with toys or bones. If she’s walked regularly and has time to play, the rest of the time will be spent snoring away.
Need a fenced in yard: No. She loves to be outside, however, so you should plan to spend some time with her on a leash walking, exploring and playing.
Dog Friendly: Denali is a bit nervous and insecure at first so she requires a slow introduction. In other words, she shouldn’t be forced to interact with any dogs immediately and may require space and time to observe before meeting. But, yes she is dog friendly. Denali lives with two resident dogs, male and female, and they get along well. She will do best with dogs her size or bigger because she does think she should be the CEO.
If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive home: No. She would love to have to share her human.
Cat friendly: Unknown, but my gut says nope.
Kid Friendly: Yes
If yes, what's the youngest age: Denali currently lives with a 10 and 14 yr old. She adores them. In her previous home, she had exposure to a range of ages. I have not observed her with anyone younger than 10 and feel comfortable saying 10+. She can be insecure and unsure, I’d be concerned little, rowdy toddlers might make her nervous.
Traits that make your foster special:
Denali is a love bug. She just wants alllllll the pets. She will usually plop herself in front of you and put her head in your lap and request some pets.
Denali was previously adopted but was returned to GRR. Her owner experienced an unexpected medical emergency and was no longer able to care for her. When she first came to us, she was reserved and nervous. Her tail didn’t move much and though she sought us out for love, it took her about 10 days to fully relax and show us her whole, silly personality. If you can imagine a happy, little hippo, then you get the picture. She can be unsure about strangers (aren’t we all ), but particularly men, and needs time to adjust to their presence. Crating her to start upon someone’s arrival and a slow intro with treats is the key to heart! (Pssst her favorite is string cheese ) Once she’s sure you’re okay, you’d never know you were a stranger to her.
Denali can be found playing with the resident dogs, taking a sniffari, or lounging around the house. She’s settled in quite nicely and now that we’ve gotten to know her better, it’s time for her take the next big step and find her forever home. If you’re looking for a companion that will motivate you to get outside then reward yourself with a little Netflix and chill, Denali is your girl.
