10/03/24 02:46Doggy Day Out Report: Today I: Today I got to go on a long walk outside the shelter. My tail wagged as I felt the grass under my paws and sniffed all the new smells. I checked out some cats and ran back to my human for treats when called. I walked nicely on the leash and loved rolling on the grass in the warm sun. I’m a big, gentle boy, and I hope to find a forever home where I can have more adventures like this!Three Words to Describe Me are: Friendly, Calm, StrongNotes from My Walker: Kylo, a 7 year old gentle giant who has spent too long at the shelter, is ready for his forever home. During our relaxing morning outing, he showed excellent potty training and enjoyed rolling in the dewy grass. Despite his size, he walks well on a leash and has great recall—coming to me with eager anticipation for treats. While he noticed a cat and showed some interest, he was easily redirected, demonstrating his calm nature. He observed other dogs during our walk but didn’t attempt to approach them. After our walk, he was eager to rest and needed a boost into the backseat of the car. He also does really well on car rides and likes to gaze out of the window. Kylo is a big, friendly meatball, and I hope he finds a place where he can relax, soak up the sun, and enjoy his golden years.Looking for a faithful sidekick? Pancake is your guy. He prefers to be a follower and not a leader. He`s a bit reserved at first meet but after a few minutes, he opens up. He likes playgroups where he can mingle with other dogs and visit the humans as he pleases. He`d love a home with a confident dog that will show him the ropes but that is not a requirement. He likes pets and is interested in lounging at home or cruising the neighborhood checking out the smells.

Story
Meet Maggie! This husky pit mix came into the Shelter as an owner surrender after her previous guardians were unable to continue caring for her. She has been described as energetic and playful. In her previous home she was crate trained and house trained. She liked to go for walks. Maggie previously lived with a small breed dog and loved to play. Since arriving at the Shelter, she has met larger breed dogs and is interested but a bit nervous when they go to play. Maggie prefers a “chase me” style play versus wrestling. A home with a dog may be a fit provided the resident dog meets Maggie to see how they mesh. Maggie has a history of prey drive in her previous home and is required to go to a home that is free of felines and/or small animals. From 10/5 through 10/31, we are having a “Spooky Low Adoption Fees” promotion. All cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies will have a reduced adoption fee of $31, while small animals will have a fee of $13. No tricks, all treats! Come on in to meet your new BFF today at 1001 Rodriguez Street, Santa Cruz from 11-6pm. All adoptions are first come, first serve in person at the Shelter, and must be completed before 4:45pm.

Learn more hereBring endless joy into your life with loyal, goofy, and affectionate Tugboat! This 4-year-old sweetheart is a soft and squishy Catahoula Leopard Dog mix who grins when he is excited to see you and is eager to match your energy. His favorite toy is any kind of ball, and he is adorably clumsy when trying to play fetch. You’ll know he is deep in sleep when his cheeks billow or his tongue pokes out of his mouth. What makes Tugboat a good fit for your home: Very quiet, nonreactive dog. He will chat with you while you’re playing, making the cutest awoos and yawns, but he is not a barker. Extremely friendly and gentle. He loves anyone and everyone, and has been great around kids. At events or in big crowds, he just goes with the flow and soaks in the love. Polite around food, even though he is VERY food motivated. He might come for a sniff, or give you puppy eyes, but he does not counter surf or try to steal food and will stay in his bed while we are eating. Great apartment dog! Sure, he could love a backyard, but he is mellow and happy with just a couple of walks/potty breaks a day. He is fully housetrained, a dream on the leash, and leaves other people, dogs and critters alone (he might stop to watch, but he won’t pull). Sleeps through the night on his bed, and, if you let him up on your bed in the morning for a cuddle, you can even sleep in an extra few hours. Well-trained, nondestructive, and eager to please. While he is clever and likes to see if he can squeeze extra treats out of you, he always tries his best to understand what you’re asking. What makes your home a good fit for Tugboat: You want an adventure buddy, and/or people are often home. Tugboat is fantastic in the car and out in public, able to stay in his ‘place’ on the back seat or under the table, but he doesn’t like to be left alone. Even with steady progress increasing his confidence while he is away from people, it’s unlikely he will ever be happy being alone for a full work day. You are willing to learn a new ‘language’. Tugboat is deaf, though you might not notice right away, and is responsive to hand signals and attuned to body language. The hardest part for us has been that he doesn’t know, and will never know, how great his name is… He loves his routines, and will quietly ‘complain’ (sit and stare) if he feels like a meal is late or someone should be home by now but isn’t. If you have a structured routine, great! If you want one, he will keep you honest. If not, maybe you can find his complaints endearing and work out a compromise, he is adaptable. You like big dogs, and cuddling, but don’t want a big dog all over you all the time. Tugboat will lay next to you, put his head in your lap, or wiggle onto your chest for a quick kiss, but he prefers gentle contact over full-body cuddling. Tugboat is ready to bring love and joy into your life and will reward you with endless companionship!
