Story
Meet Maggie! This husky pit mix came into the Shelter as an owner surrender after her previous guardians were unable to continue caring for her. She has been described as energetic and playful. In her previous home she was crate trained and house trained. She liked to go for walks. Maggie previously lived with a small breed dog and loved to play. Since arriving at the Shelter, she has met larger breed dogs and is interested but a bit nervous when they go to play. Maggie prefers a “chase me” style play versus wrestling. A home with a dog may be a fit provided the resident dog meets Maggie to see how they mesh. Maggie has a history of prey drive in her previous home and is required to go to a home that is free of felines and/or small animals. From 10/5 through 10/31, we are having a “Spooky Low Adoption Fees” promotion. All cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies will have a reduced adoption fee of $31, while small animals will have a fee of $13. No tricks, all treats! Come on in to meet your new BFF today at 1001 Rodriguez Street, Santa Cruz from 11-6pm. All adoptions are first come, first serve in person at the Shelter, and must be completed before 4:45pm.

10/03/24 02:46Doggy Day Out Report: Today I: Today I got to go on a long walk outside the shelter. My tail wagged as I felt the grass under my paws and sniffed all the new smells. I checked out some cats and ran back to my human for treats when called. I walked nicely on the leash and loved rolling on the grass in the warm sun. I’m a big, gentle boy, and I hope to find a forever home where I can have more adventures like this!Three Words to Describe Me are: Friendly, Calm, StrongNotes from My Walker: Kylo, a 7 year old gentle giant who has spent too long at the shelter, is ready for his forever home. During our relaxing morning outing, he showed excellent potty training and enjoyed rolling in the dewy grass. Despite his size, he walks well on a leash and has great recall—coming to me with eager anticipation for treats. While he noticed a cat and showed some interest, he was easily redirected, demonstrating his calm nature. He observed other dogs during our walk but didn’t attempt to approach them. After our walk, he was eager to rest and needed a boost into the backseat of the car. He also does really well on car rides and likes to gaze out of the window. Kylo is a big, friendly meatball, and I hope he finds a place where he can relax, soak up the sun, and enjoy his golden years.Looking for a faithful sidekick? Pancake is your guy. He prefers to be a follower and not a leader. He`s a bit reserved at first meet but after a few minutes, he opens up. He likes playgroups where he can mingle with other dogs and visit the humans as he pleases. He`d love a home with a confident dog that will show him the ropes but that is not a requirement. He likes pets and is interested in lounging at home or cruising the neighborhood checking out the smells.

Story
Looks like: Large Mixed Breed Female, 6 years old, 63 pounds Beach Lovers unite! If you are as much of a self-proclaimed beach bum as Flora is, then you should definitely meet each other! For this stunning girl with her mile-long legs, there is no other place she would rather be. Flora arrived at POMDR as a very special delivery, when we took in her pregnant mother Nellie in 2018 and she gave birth to a litter of adorable puppies with Flora among them. She got adopted as soon as she was old enough and moved to the quiet countryside. Since then, she has been deeply devoted and attentive to a small circle of people she knows and trusts. When meeting new people, she can be quite shy and requires patience and sensitivity while she slowly warms up. She likes a routine, spending the day with familiar peeps in familiar places, but she needs time to adjust to anything unfamiliar. Flora is very smart and always eager to learn, well-behaved when home alone, and an excellent co-pilot on car rides. This mellow pup gets along well with other easy-going dogs, but she is not a fan of sharing her home with other pups or with cats so she is looking to be a solo dog in her next home. She would like you to know that snuggling is not really her thing. Flora would love to find a quiet and predictable home with a really big yard, no young children, and with no other animals. Although she is usually calm, she does get spooked sometimes when on the leash and may pull quite hard. This independent lady is very strong and can be stubborn, so she is looking for her very special human who is equally strong to handle her, patient and intuitive with helping her overcome her insecurities, willing to keep her smart brain engaged with training, and most of all, someone who enjoys her amazing presence. POMDR will provide tools, guidance, and a consultation with a private trainer to get Flora off to a good start in her new home. After several beautiful years together, Flora returned to POMDR because her adopter's health declined and she was no longer able to provide Flora with the exercise and continued training she requires.
