I am in a foster home and not at the shelter. If you are interested in adopting, submit an adoption questionnaire by email. Learn more hereBring endless joy into your life with loyal, goofy, and affectionate Tugboat! This 4-year-old sweetheart is a soft and squishy Catahoula Leopard Dog mix who grins when he is excited to see you and is eager to match your energy. His favorite toy is any kind of ball, and he is adorably clumsy when trying to play fetch. You’ll know he is deep in sleep when his cheeks billow or his tongue pokes out of his mouth. What makes Tugboat a good fit for your home: Very quiet, nonreactive dog. He will chat with you while you’re playing, making the cutest awoos and yawns, but he is not a barker. Extremely friendly and gentle. He loves anyone and everyone, and has been great around kids. At events or in big crowds, he just goes with the flow and soaks in the love. Polite around food, even though he is VERY food motivated. He might come for a sniff, or give you puppy eyes, but he does not counter surf or try to steal food and will stay in his bed while we are eating. Great apartment dog! Sure, he could love a backyard, but he is mellow and happy with just a couple of walks/potty breaks a day. He is fully housetrained, a dream on the leash, and leaves other people, dogs and critters alone (he might stop to watch, but he won’t pull). Sleeps through the night on his bed, and, if you let him up on your bed in the morning for a cuddle, you can even sleep in an extra few hours. Well-trained, nondestructive, and eager to please. While he is clever and likes to see if he can squeeze extra treats out of you, he always tries his best to understand what you’re asking. What makes your home a good fit for Tugboat: You want an adventure buddy, and/or people are often home. Tugboat is fantastic in the car and out in public, able to stay in his ‘place’ on the back seat or under the table, but he doesn’t like to be left alone. Even with steady progress increasing his confidence while he is away from people, it’s unlikely he will ever be happy being alone for a full work day. You are willing to learn a new ‘language’. Tugboat is deaf, though you might not notice right away, and is responsive to hand signals and attuned to body language. The hardest part for us has been that he doesn’t know, and will never know, how great his name is… He loves his routines, and will quietly ‘complain’ (sit and stare) if he feels like a meal is late or someone should be home by now but isn’t. If you have a structured routine, great! If you want one, he will keep you honest. If not, maybe you can find his complaints endearing and work out a compromise, he is adaptable. You like big dogs, and cuddling, but don’t want a big dog all over you all the time. Tugboat will lay next to you, put his head in your lap, or wiggle onto your chest for a quick kiss, but he prefers gentle contact over full-body cuddling. Tugboat is ready to bring love and joy into your life and will reward you with endless companionship! Story
**I qualify for the HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS NAME YOUR OWN ADOPTION FEE SPECIAL through the end of the year!**WEIGHT: 51 lbs This is Norman. Paused very briefly for a photo next to his ball, but had to get going. That`s so Norman, he`s got places to be, balls to fetch, dogs to wrestle, people to greet. Ending up in a shelter after being found running errands on his own is really clogging up his schedule. Norman is seeking out a new family with which to collab in life`s adventures. This athletic 2-year-old Catahoula hound mix (guess) is about 50 pounds of lean muscle. He`s a strong boy who has a lot of go -- and he`s also goofy, loving, playful, and sweet. Norman has a bunch of dog buddies that he crashes around with during playgroup and a bunch of people buddies that he enjoys snuggling with. We don`t have a history on this boy, but what we do know, we love! And he qualifies for our holiday adoption special. Come meet him during Browsing Hours (Wed-Sun from 11am-5pm).

Story
Meet Pistachio!-4-ish month old mixed breed (Anatolian is a guess!) -Came in as a stray so we do not have any history of this pup prior to the Shelter-Has been exuberant and playful when interacting with staff and volunteers-Likely not house trained and will need to work on other life skills and manners (think being left alone/crate training, walking on leash, potty training)-Adopters should plan on positive reinforcement training and management to help these puppies acclimate to their new home. They are not house trained and are still learning various life skills and manners. With time, treats and toys – we anticipate that they will learn modern day dog skills to prepare them for adulthood-Have met other dogs and enjoys jumping in on a game of chase and light wrestling-Can be mouthy when interacting with people. Adopters should have some tools in their toolbelts to manage the behavior (redirection to toys paired with mental and physical stimulation). -No history with cats or small animals-Sturdy children may be a fit Now through December 23rd – the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter is hosting “Home for the Holidays”. This adoption event reduces the adoption fee for all cats, rabbits and dogs to $50.Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Lexi is an awesome dog! She is super friendly, and loyal, bonding quickly to her people. She loves to play a game of fetch, and looks to her people to learn, play, engage and have FUN! Lexi does well with her commands such as sit, lay down, take it and drop it. Because she is a high energy dog she would do best in an active household who have experience with large dogs (she weighs ~55+lbs). She is quite food motivated, so having treats on you would be great, she also loves to learn. SHe is a great hiking, jogging or running partner! Lexi resides with a playmate at our Sanctuary and they come out to go on runs with the side-by-side buggy, she LOVES IT! And there is nothing better than a romp at the creek or at least a dip in the trough/pool! Lexi is a playgirl and a tomboy, she loves affection, playing with people and dogs, loves toys, and being an important part of her people's lives! Lexii loves being the center of attention, and so may be easiest as an only dog in the home, but for dog savvy folks, who engage in training and creating boundaries where needed she can co-house. She is currently taking a break at the Milo Sanctuary and living with three other dogs - happily! She has a beautiful golden, brindle coat and is a nice size, lean and athletic, perfect for wide open spaces and running. ADOPTION FEE: $550
