Story
Don’t be fooled by his cute little face - Spike is the project puppy you didn’t know you wanted!Spike was surrendered to the shelter in early January due to being “too aggressive” at such a young age. Fortunately for him, a patient and loving foster home was willing to take him to assess his behavior further and determine how to help Spike be successful, if possible. It turns out that Spike was struggling with high arousal spurts, combined with frustration he didn’t know how to handle, low bite inhibition, and overall high energy. That’s so many large feelings in such a small dog! His saving grace is that he is super food motivated and loves to learn so it didn’t take long for his foster family to help his curb some of these less-than-desirable behaviors.Spike has a ton of energy to burn and isn’t cut out for the couch potato life. Lots of exercise is going to be key to keeping him from making poor choices. His ideal home would have a *patient* adult dog who enjoys playing and wrestling that could help continue to teach Spike how “speak dog”. Though he is a smaller size, he easily overpowers dogs that are smaller than him so a bestie that’s bigger than him would be best. He is quite the talker and often barks relentlessly to express his frustration and demands. He does well in a confined space for bedtime or when left alone and is making great progress with his housetraining. He enjoys playing with toys, food puzzles, and stuffed Kongs to keep his boredom at bay.In his foster home, he lives with large and small dogs; cats (though he is learning that cats are not for chasing); and a toddler, whom he adores despite the fact it’s not mutual. He loves attention from humans and really has all the makings to be a great companion for someone who can be patient with his puppy antics and is willing to put boundaries in place with positive reinforcement, redirection, and tons of praise (he LOVES being told he’s a “good boy”!)If you’re looking for a challenge in a pup named Spike, please reach out to his foster parents, Allison & Joshua, at waldvogel0724@gmail.com to inquire about him or to set up a visit. Please allow Allison & Joshua 24 hours to respond.
