Story
Bear is a very handsome, young boy looking for a forever home of his own. We believe he is a Boxer mix, sporting a very attractive dark brindle coat. We estimate Bear’s date of birth at February 10, 2021. At the time of this posting he is just under two years old. He is about 60 lbs. Bear loves people and he also loves eating almost anything. He is not so much a chewer, as a dog who likes to eat rocks, sticks, toys. As such, his new family will need to be vigilant to ensure Bear does not get himself into trouble, ingesting non-food items! Bear is active and energetic, typical of a big, young dog, and sometimes can get carried away with his play. He loves running in the secure, fenced yard of his foster home. He keeps himself entertained (but, watch out for him eating rocks, sticks, etc!!); he would not do well in a dog park or day care. We suggest he be an only dog. Given his size and energy level, Bear would not be an ideal canine companion for younger children. We expect children over the age of 12 would be ok. And of course, an all-adult home would be perfect for Bear! An ideal home for Bear is one in which he can thrive as an only dog, with a family experienced with larger dogs who sometimes can get out of hand. The family will also need to be vigilant when it comes to Bear’s tendency to seek out interesting things to eat. As is the case with all young, larger dogs, Bear would greatly benefit from obedience training which can also be a bonding experience with his new family. No doubt, Bear has the potential to evolve into the perfect pup, but is looking for that family willing to commit to him and provide him the forever home he deserves. Bear is fully vetted, up to date on all vaccinations, neutered & microchipped and on year-round heartworm prevention. To learn how you can add this handsome young boy to your family, please contact BAARKDogRescue@gmail.com or 847-852-0895. BAARK is located in the Chicago area and adopt our dogs only local to the area.

Story
Harvest is a young, energetic pup who is looking for someone to explore life with! She came to us from our shelter partner in rural Nebraska, where they have almost 200 dogs. The folks at her old shelter thought she would get noticed better with us, so we brought her here and made her a Heartland dog. It doesn't seem like anyone has taken the time to teach her anything, but Harvest is motivated and loves to learn. She's learning her basic commands quickly. Anything for a good treat. She also loves her toys and running around the yard! Harvest has canine friends but she does have a strong personality and may not be every dogs "cup of tea." Bigger dogs are probably best with her. Harvest is in boarding as we still do not have our physical shelter, and is looking for a foster home!

Story
Thora is living in a foster home. Please submit an application from our website and/or email dogs@heartlandanimalshelter.org to learn if you are a match! Thora is our beautiful 1 year old boxer mix who comes from Nebraska. She was living in their shelter, where they have almost 200 dogs, and she was overlooked there for no good reason. She came to Heartland and has been doing well in a foster home. They absolutely adore her! She loves playing with soft and squeaky toys and enjoys gnawing on beef hide bones and bully sticks. Generally, she knows the difference between toys and other objects, though she occasionally will grab a hat or glove and needs a reminder! She didn't have much experience walking on a leash before coming to us, but she is learning to heel and has the strength/ability to go on long walks. She's very curious, loves sniffing everything, and is obsessed with squirrels. Although Thora doesn't live with dogs in her foster home, she has previously lived with other dogs and has met a few dogs in our care. She is VERY excited when she meets them and may need slower introductions, so she doesn't overwhelm them. Once she gets to know the dog, she relaxes and becomes calmer around them. Here is what Thora's fosters have to say about her, "Thora is the ultimate companion who aims to please! Excitable at first, she quickly calms down and is the absolute sweetest. She loves long walks, playing with toys, and curling up on the carpet - as long as she gets to hang with her people. Comfortable in a crate, though she is thrilled to sleep on the bed and is virtually silent all night long. But when you open your eyes in the morning, get ready to be showered with wet kisses! Thora comes when called, sits beautifully, is super smart, and has the gentlest way of accepting treats. She is full of love and energy and can't wait to meet her forever family!" Thora's adoption fee is $250. This animal is spayed, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.

Story
In the heart of an animal shelter, there dwells a lovable girl named Shanny, patiently awaiting her forever home. She is the embodiment of a dog's unwavering love and loyalty, a true testament to the bond that can exist between humans and their furry companions. Shanny's heart is filled with a deep affection for people, and her calm and gentle disposition makes her a beloved presence to all who have the privilege of knowing her. She exudes warmth and kindness, and her eyes sparkle with the promise of shared adventures and cozy companionship. One of Shanny's favorite activities is going on a nice walk, where she can stretch her legs, explore new scents, and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. But her true joy lies in the moments that follow, as she curls up next to you on the couch while you watch your favorite TV show. Her peaceful presence by your side is a reminder of the tranquility that can be found in the company of a faithful friend. Shanny's age, at 7 years old, is often a reason why she is passed by, and it's a question that bewilders those who have come to know her. To Shanny, 7 years is a golden age, filled with countless opportunities for new adventures and stories to tell. She may not be a playful puppy, but she brings a wealth of wisdom and a heart filled with a lifetime of love to share. The question of why slightly older dogs like Shanny are often overlooked is indeed perplexing, for they possess a unique charm and grace that can only come with age. Shanny is living proof that adopting an older dog is a decision filled with rewards and countless moments of joy. So, if you're considering bringing a new companion into your life, please take a moment to consider Shanny. She is a fabulous girl with a heart overflowing with love and a world of experiences to share. By opening your heart and home to Shanny, you'll be rewarded with a lifetime of loyalty, love, and cherished memories. We promise you, the happiness she brings will be immeasurable, and together, you'll embark on a journey of love and companionship that will enrich both of your lives.

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Meet our sweet boy Sherman. He is a senior dog with a gentle soul that enjoys being around his people. Sherman likes to play for a short time. He would do best in a home with an older dog that is as relaxed as him. He does pick the dogs he is most comfortable around and he definitely wouldn't enjoy an energetic puppy. If you are interested in meeting Sherman, the first step is to go to our website www.adoggie4you.org and complete an application for him.  This dog is currently in Texas; however, it can be transported to Washington, Portland (Oregon), Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago, Des Moines, Omaha, Cin c innati, Lexington KY,     or all along the East Coast. If transported, there is an additional transport fee of $225   . We do not transport to Rhode Island or Massachusetts due to their regulations. Story
Capone, affectionately known as “Cappy,” is a 4-year-old, beautiful brindle boy with a story that tugs at the heartstrings. For over 1,175 days, he has waited in shelter and foster care, longing for a family to call his own. He spent 18 months at Winnebago County Animal Control and has now been with Second City Canine Rescue for 638 days—one of the longest foster stays in SCCR history.Cappy was once adopted, but through no fault of his own, he was returned due to the adopters’ unforeseen circumstances. Despite this setback, he remained a shining light at the shelter, where he helped staff evaluate other animals, showcasing his gentle spirit and intelligence. In his foster home, Cappy has proven just how special he is. He’s mastered commands like “sit,” “fetch,” “touch,” “down,” and “paw,” and he delights in giving kisses to everyone he meets. He has a soft spot for children, and he is one of the best cuddlers around. While he isn’t overly energetic and doesn’t require daily walks, he dreams of a home with a fenced yard where he can play fetch to his heart`s content.Cappy is incredibly treat-motivated, making him an eager learner for any additional training you wish to pursue. He’s fully house-trained and doesn’t need to be crated when his family is away—he just wants to be loved and included.Cappy deserves a family who will cherish him, spoil him, and provide him the love he has so desperately waited for. Every day that passes without a forever home feels like an eternity for this sweet boy. If you’re ready to open your heart and home, Cappy is ready to give you unconditional love in return. Will you be the family he’s been waiting so long for?Interested in adopting this dog? Story
Copper is a dog of many talents. He’s the self-appointed captain of the water polo team! His obsession with the kiddie pool is unmatched, dreaming of swimming all day long. He’s a polite walker, though if another dog catches his eye, he might need a little reminder to stay on track. Copper is learning to be a pro at signaling when it’s time for a potty break, improving each day! Another one of Copper`s talents is high jumping. He needs to have a six-foot privacy fence in his future home. When it comes to food, Copper’s a dream—he’ll happily eat just about anything! Strength is a natural talent that he shows with his toy-destroying abilities; only the toughest toys can handle his playful energy. Skilled at knowing when and when not to bark, Copper’s prefers to speak up when he sees someone running outside, a stranger approaching, the doorbell ringing, or when there’s an unexpected knock. He’s always up for a new adventure, and he’s the perfect co-pilot in the car, safely harnessed in the back seat. When the day winds down or his foster needs to be out of the home, Copper’s is more than happy to settle in his kennel for a well-deserved treat. Once he’s in, he’s content and cozy, ready to recharge for his next round of fun.A true social butterfly, Copper’s thrives on attention from his people and visitors alike. He’s mastered the art of snuggling, and his love for belly rubs and ear scratches is endless. Goofy, bouncy, and always full of energy, Copper’s antics are bound to make you smile. While he’s eager to please, his enthusiasm can sometimes outpace his attention span—but that’s part of his charm! He gets along well with the two dogs in his foster`s home, though his playful wrestling may be a bit too much for some. With his fun-loving personality, Copper may prefer the company of dogs who enjoy his spirited play style. He also prefers older, more mature children than younger ones.Copper is looking for the perfect match, a loving family where he can truly shine. He is very smart and has a lot of potential. He desires someone who is patient and will guide him to be his best self. Can this be you?Interested in adopting this dog? Story
Chato found himself at Chicago Animal Control, abandoned by the family he had been loyal to his entire life. He was in very bad shape and appeared to be very old due to the neglect he suffered. His skin was terribly infected and hope of ever finding love and happiness had been extinguished from his eyes. We could not let this cute Pocket Pittie die without knowing the kindness of a human touch or that every day does not need to be filled with fear and mistreatment. Once pulled from Animal Control, Chato knew instantly that he was safe and life would be better….and it sure was!! Chato’s medical needs were immediately addressed, his skin issues were resolved, and his spirit slowly returned. Today, Chato is a silly little pup, recovered from his past, and looking to continue to live the happy healthy life he so deserves…..with a family of his own. Chato is just 4-5 years old, and weighs about 35lbs…..tiny for a Pitbull! He is very playful and spirited, and loves being with people. He enjoys cuddling and definitely being petted too! He takes treats gently, and sits nicely for them. He is housebroken and is eager to please! Chato is sure to make a wonderful addition to any family worthy of him!! Chato walks nicely on a leash; he does not react when he sees other dogs out and about. However, Chato does need to be an only dog; he’s not fond of sharing his home with other four-legged creatures…dogs or cats!! An ideal home for Chato is with a family with significant Pitbull experience, but having no other dogs currently ; Chato absolutely deserves to receive all the attention for himself. He’d love a fenced yard and deserves a family willing to spend time with him and include him in all family activities. Chato may enjoy the company of older children but younger children may be too much for him. Chato is fully vetted, up-to-date on all vaccinations, neutered, microchipped, and heartworm negative/on year-round heartworm prevention. A solid, verifiable vet history for all past pets is required for all adopters of BAARK Dogs. If you are interested in adding Chato to your family, please email BAARKDogRescue@gmail.com or call 847-852-0895 for an adoption application.
