Story
Meet Butters – a 6-year-old Boxer mix with a heart as soft as, well… I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butters! 🧈This sweet girl came to us as an owner surrender—not because she wasn’t loved, but because her previous owner could no longer care for her and wanted to make sure she found the best home possible. And trust us – Butters is worth it.Butters is gentle, affectionate, and great with kids. Even though she’s 6, she still loves to play and has plenty of pep in her step. Whether it’s a romp in the yard or a squeaky toy showdown, she’s always down for some fun—followed by a good cuddle session, of course.Butters does have two tick-borne diseases, which can occasionally flare up. When they do, she may need medication—but otherwise, she’s happy, active, and full of life.Come meet Butters – we promise she’s the real deal… even if you can’t believe it! 😄 If you are interested in meeting any of our animals, we encourage you to first visit our website and submit an adoption application: acskc.org/adoption/adoption-applicationOnce your adoption application has been approved, we will call you to set up an appointment to meet with the pet! We welcome adopters from out of state to apply! _When it comes to our pets, we're all-inclusive! Dog Name: Lorelai Breed: Boxer Sex: Female Age: 3 years Weight: 45lbs. Medical needs: Lorelai was diagnosed with arthritis and hip dysplasia. She takes Dasuquin daily (joint supplement) and carprofen. Housebroken: It’s a work in progress! She does great on a schedule and has had no accidents in her crate. Crate trained: Yes. She goes in with no issues and is as quiet as a mouse. Good in the car: Unknown Good on a leash: No. She freezes as soon as a leash is put on her. In time, and with work and patience, this could change. Energy level: Medium Need a fenced-in yard: Yes, since leashes terrify her. Dog Friendly: Yes. Lorelai hasn’t met a dog she doesn’t want to play with and be friends with! If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive home? YES!!! She loves ALL dogs, people take time to earn her trust and affection. Cat Friendly? Unknown. Kid Friendly: Unknown. If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? Children under 10 are not recommended unless there is parental supervision. She is still learning that all people aren’t bad but does get scared of fast movements and loud noises. Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them? Lorelai has come a very LONG way since she arrived in November. She LOVES other dogs and she is learning to trust people. She was very timid at first, but her confidence is growing every day! Now that she’s coming out of her shell, her personality is really starting to shine! She’s super playful and has the most adorable head tilt! She gets the cutest zoomies, but she also loves her naps. Lorelai THRIVES with other dogs - the more the merrier in her book! ##2213922##

Story
Dog Name: Christopher Robin Breed: Boxer/Bulldog mix Sex: Male Age: 2 years Weight: 49.6 pounds Medical Needs: None. Housebroken: Yes. Crate trained: Yes. He eats in his crate and is confined to his crate with a special treat when I leave the house or when “new people” come to the house. He sleeps in my bed at night. Be forewarned — he snores! (If left in his crate longer than 9-10 hours, he will sometimes have a potty accident.) Good in the car: Yes, he’s a good car traveler and rides with a harness/seat belt in the back seat. Good on a leash: Meh. He is strong and pulls sometimes to check things out or to get where he wants to go as we’re walking. Energy level: Medium. Christopher Robin likes to run and play with the other dogs in my house or at daycare. He also settles well and is happy to “sploot” and quietly chew his Benebones. (He can be pretty hard on stuffed toys, though.) He paces himself well to the activity level of my other dogs. If they are playing, he’s game for a romp. If they are snoozing, he’s in the middle of the pile — all in for a good nap. Need a fenced in yard: He needs regular opportunities to get outside to go potty, so if no fenced yard, he’ll need regular leash walks. He will tear around and play with my other dogs, so the yard is handy to let him spend his energy, too, especially if you don’t want too much active play in your house. He is a curious dog and likes to spend time outside in the yard watching who’s doing what in the ‘hood. Dog Friendly: Yes. If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive home? Yes, another dog pal in the home would be good for Christopher Robin. Having a social outlet to interact with other dogs is a must for him. He loves to play with the other dogs in my home and has learned so much about how to be a dog from them that I think a playmate would help him acclimate more easily to his new home. He has “packed in” well with my dogs and enjoys going to doggie daycare too when they go. Cat Friendly: He has only had limited interactions with my cats, but has given them a wide berth. So far, he’s been much more interested in their food than in having any interactions with them. Kid Friendly: Unknown. If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? He needs a quieter home, with dog savvy kids who are old enough to understand they need to go slow with him (age 10-12+) — or no kids. A loud active household with people coming and going all the time would be too much for him. He can be “hand shy” and tentative when approaching new people if they don’t respect his space. Sudden approaches or people bringing their hands down to pet his head reinforce his fears from previously being hit, so any kids would need to be old enough and respectful enough to learn how to approach him slowly and bring their hands from below so they don’t trigger his fear of being hit. The best way for new people (adults or kids) to meet Christopher Robin is to ignore him and let him come to you on his terms. Don’t look at him, hug him, or get into his space before he’s ready for it — these human behaviors, especially from unfamiliar people, overwhelm him. Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them? This sums up our boy, Christopher Robin, in a nutshell — “I'm just a soul whose intentions are good Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood” Christopher Robin came into the shelter under nourished, undersocialized, neglected, and clearly beaten. He is socially awkward and is still learning how to be a dog. When he’s nervous, he sometimes vocalizes to let you know he’s unsure of the situation. He may always need his trusted human to be his advocate and help him navigate uncharted waters. He was under-sized and underweight when he came to the shelter and has gained 20 pounds since coming to Grass Roots. His GI system is still acclimating from the months of neglect he endured, and he is doing well now that he’s eating a “low-fat” diet. (Giving him people food can send him into a bout of gas or diarrhea.) Despite his past, he’s got a huge heart! He’s a happy cuddler who loves to give wet, sloppy kisses to his favorite people. He has come so far in his foster home and will continue to improve with patience, love, and consistency. This ‘goombah’ is such a sweet, goofy, resilient guy who also happens to have the cutest underbite! We are looking for a patient home that will help him thrive and grow into the awesome dog that he can be! ** Multiple meets will be required so that he can build trust with his new family before going home. ** Foster’s Location: Wilmington, DE Application can be found here: https://www.grrde.org/adoption-application (if you already have an approved application on file email GrassRootsDE@gmail.com and ask the app team to pull your app) ##1980877##

Story
Dog name: Apalla Breed: boxer mix Sex: female Age: approximately 1 year Weight: 42 pounds Medical Needs: Apalla has sensitive skin and some hair loss. She also has a hearing deficit. None of these things stop her from loving life and being the happiest girl. Housebroken: Almost there! She can go days without accidents, but she doesn't signal to let you know she needs to go out. She does need to be put out frequently and does best with a routine. Good in a crate: She goes in for a treat and sometimes she settles quickly and other times she makes sure you know she's sad about it. Good in the car: Yes, Apalla is harnessed in the back on her dog bed and she lays right down. She is perfect in the car! Good on a leash: Apalla is doing very well walking on a leash. She zig zags a little but overall she is a good walker. Energy level: medium She is taken for a morning walk, has some playtime with her foster sister and then she's ready for a long nap. She does have bursts of puppy energy, but they are pretty short lived. Need a fenced in yard: No, she will be fine with leashed walks. Dog Friendly: Apalla absolutely loves other dogs. She is very playful with her furry friends and enjoys snuggling with them too. If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive home? No Cat Friendly? Yes Kid Friendly: Yes If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? Any, with proper supervision. Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know: Apalla came from a neglectful living situation in Georgia where she spent all of her time outside with other dogs. It is quite miraculous that she is so friendly to people and that she has adapted so easily to life in a home. Her perfect home includes humans that aren't gone more than 4 to 5 hours a day, someone who will give her belly rubs and snuggles on the couch. After a rough start, this sweet girl deserves the best! Foster location: Apalla is being fostered in Dover, Delaware. If you're interested in Apalla, you can find an application at grrde.org/adoption-application. If you already have an approved application on file, email Grassrootsde@gmail.com and say you're interested in Apalla ##2175349##

Story
Through no fault of his own this precious bean, Mr. Moo, is looking for a new home. He is a 3 year old pit mix (35lbs) who has lived with a cat and is good with older kids (8+). He is up to date on vaccinations, neutered, and has completed a formal basic puppy training course. Mr. Moo would do best in a single dog home. To clarify, he is not unfriendly with dogs, he just does not exactly know the best ways to socialize. Mr. Moo is crate trained and house trained. Leash walk or fenced yard required. He is a medium energy boy, who enjoys active play but also likes to cuddle on the couch. He will hang out in whatever room has people in it. During home alone times he should be crated or limited to a room with lots of dog friendly toys for positive entertainment. Mr. Moo is overall a lovable goof ball who lives simply for pets, cuddles, and play. His favorite things are any length of walks, puppy massages, and cuddling while watching animal documentaries.
