Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website. * This animal is a part of our “Seniors for Seniors” program where we offer senior adopters an opportunity to adopt an eligible pet at a discounted fee.* Thunder is a gentle, resilient senior dog with a quiet soul and a past that has made him all the more deserving of peace and love. After the passing of his owner, Thunder was scared and neglected, but despite everything he’s been through, he’s ready to find a calm, loving hospice home where he can live out his remaining years in comfort. Thunder has arthritis, cataracts, and anxiety, which require ongoing medication to manage his pain and anxiety. His cataracts have affected his vision, so he may have some trouble seeing clearly, but he still enjoys sniffing around the yard and checking things out outside. A fenced-in yard would be ideal for Thunder, as he enjoys exploring his surroundings at his own pace, taking in the sights and smells in a safe, secure environment. He is a large breed and around 90lbs but very thin, and should gain about 10-20lbs if possible. He is a very tall and handsome guy! At home, Thunder enjoys lounging on orthopedic beds, relaxing in a quiet corner, and savoring food and treats. He is potty trained and thrives in a predictable routine, where life is calm and stress-free. Thunder loves the occasional head scratch and gentle brushing once he has built trust with his person, but he’s not one to seek out attention all the time. He’s happiest when he has a peaceful spot to rest and enjoy his surroundings. While Thunder is good with other dogs and cats, he wouldn’t be a good fit for a home with a young, active dog or a playful puppy. His arthritis makes him sensitive to too much physical activity, and he prefers a slower pace of life. He would do best in a home with minimal to no stairs, where he can move around comfortably without additional strain. Thunder is a little shy and will take time to warm up to new people, particularly men. But once he feels safe and comfortable, he’s a sweet, quiet companion who enjoys gentle affection. He’s not looking for excitement or adventures—just a soft, cozy place to rest and someone to quietly share his days with. Thunder would do best in a home where someone is around most of the time, as he finds comfort in stability and routine. A patient adopter who understands the needs of a senior dog and is willing to let Thunder take things at his own pace would be ideal.  Thunder might not ask for much, but he will be a loyal and loving companion for the right person. If you have the quiet, secure home Thunder needs and can offer him the care and attention he deserves, he’ll reward you with quiet, affectionate companionship. **Note:** Thunder's medical care includes ongoing medication for pain, anxiety, and keeping an eye on the progress of his eyesight. His adopter should be prepared to continue managing his medical needs to keep him comfortable in his final years. Ruff Start does help with the first 3 months of medication and end of life care when needed. Adopting a senior dog is like getting a vintage car – it comes with character, a few extra quirks, and might need a bit more maintenance. Expect occasional tune ups at the vet for oil changes (aka meds), and embrace the fact that those 'normal lumps and bumps' are just part of the well-earned charm package! Ruff Start will share all known health information with adopters and rec ommendations to keep your senior dog in top shape. Thunder is from a local impound.  If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract.
