I'm an adult with a job and a mortgage, yet the other day I snatched a food bowl away from a fellow volunteer and shouted, "mine!"It was Mika's food bowl, and I had been looking forward to feeding him all morning!NOBODY greets you like Mika -- He spins! He makes joyful chatterbox sounds! He rubs his soft self against you and looks at you like you hung the stars and moon!You don't have to bring him food -- Mika's overjoyed to see you no matter what -- but it's nice to have something tasty to give him after he puts on such a show for you. Mika is a 2-year-old Border Collie Mix -- healthy, affectionate, smart, joyful and loyal! He immediately connects with you -- talk to him, and he really seems to be listening! Mika was a FABULOUS dog in a home (housetrained with excellent manners), but Mika made it his mission to herd and "protect" his family's four-year-old human, and that put everyone, including Mika, on edge. So, in order to relax and be the happiest, calmest Mika he can be, we're looking for a home with no young children. Mika would also prefer a home without other pets -- this way, he can enjoy life instead of constantly working to organize and manage everything!If you want a constant companion who's eager to learn and please, who loves to play and cuddle, and who'd enjoy long hikes and neighborhood strolls, then you want Mika! Come meet Mika, and you'll understand why I almost ruined a friendship with a fabulous volunteer in order to feed him (yes -- I apologized later. But I'd do it again.). We're open every day from 9am to noon (including weekends and holidays. Animal Aid Society is located at 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA, 23666.Interested? Hello, my name is Merlin and I’m here to sweep you off your feet. I’m a dashing Border Collie mix with a striking white and black coat. At 2-3 years old and around 40 pounds, I’m the perfect blend of brains and brawn. My captivating blue eyes will have you falling head over paws! I’m a high-energy guy, always ready for an adventure. Whether it’s chasing a ball, exploring the great outdoors, or learning new tricks, count me in! I’m super smart and a quick learner – especially if treats are involved. I’m not just about playtime; I’m a cuddler too! Belly rubs? Yes, please! I thrive on human attention and will happily sit in your lap – even if I’m a bit bigger than your average lap dog. Now, let’s talk about my quirks. I’m not a fan of crates – they cramp my style. And watch out for your ankles – my herding instincts kick in, and I might try a playful nip. But fear not! With some guidance, I’ll learn what’s appropriate. I’ve been in boarding because of my escape artist skills (I’m like Houdini with fences!). But what I really want is a family to call my own. Maybe you’re the one? Let’s embark on this beautiful journey together! I am selective with other dogs. I have not been cat-tested but I can be if you’d like. I am vaccinated and neutered. What a precious, loving, beautiful young dog. Vance is a delight with many kisses! While slightly shy after his plane ride from Duplin County, he quickly warmed up and was so happy to ride in the car to his next destination. He covered his backseat handler with tons of love and kisses. Vance is about 35 lbs with eyes that melt your heart. He wants to be close to you, almost hugging you, yet ready to run and play. His fur is so soft and beautiful as if he has just been groomed. Vance is probably not quite a year old yet but will make a wonderful pet, especially for agility and obedience work. Vance is fully vaccinated, heartworm negative, on heartworm and flea prevention, and will be neutered and microchipped as soon as possible. He was very good with his traveling partner, a beautiful tan and white Beagle and collie mix, also from Duplin County, NC, and tested well with other dogs at the shelter. Now that Vance is getting ready for his forever home, you won’t find a happier dog! He's very playful and eager to please his humans. Say hello to Kendy, a peppy puppy so happy to be out of the Duplin County shelter! She is now free to run and play in a large fenced setting with her sisters where they finally get to experience the joys of puppyhood! At five months old and 23 pounds, Kendi is fully vaccinated, on heartworm and flea prevention, and will be spayed in a month or so when she's old enough. The dog scanner has her listed as a Catahoula Leopard and border collie blend, but we can see some lab/terrier in her, too. She is definitely good with other dogs and very sweet and friendly with her humans. And if she's anything like her sister Knoxlee, she's also good with cats. Like her siblings, Kendi is very intelligent and would be an ideal candidate for agility training. She would be an absolute star on an agility course and make her owner proud! Now that she's out of the shelter, she has a chance to truly shine and be the outstanding little dog she's meant to be!
