Allow me to introduce you to Waffles, a mixed breed youngster picked up by one of our officers on 12/7 and brought to the Mesquite Animal Shelter as a stray. Isn’t he a handsome and adorable pup? Waffles has plenty of vim and vigor and in his excitement, he will jump continually on you! This will be something a foster or adopter need to address and correct. Until that happens, he would not be a good fit for a home with very small children. He has an outgoing and confident personality. Nothing timid or shy about Waffles. He is friendly and a-OK with being petted and loved on. He likes treats and therefore may be easy to train with the motivation of yummy treats. And he does need manners training! Waffles walks quite nicely on a leash despite his high energy level! This may have been his first time out of the kennel since his arrival. Therefore, it may be quite understandable the high level on the “energy” barometer! There is no doubt that with daily playtime, exercise, enrichment, and training this boy would become a devoted family member! No how, no way (he informs me) does Waffles want to be an outside dog! Henry came to us as a young pup and was diagnosed with Megaesophagus. You can see by looking at him that it does not slow him down. The absolute only thing different between him and any other dog is that he has to eat on two feet. Everything else is normal. Eating on 4 feet is not an option for him. However, he can drink and have treats on 4. He is crate, house trained, and doggie door trained. He gets along well with all size of dogs as he has several foster siblings. He is very loving and affectionate and believe it or not is sensitive. When researching this condition, ask questions as not all cases are the same. His foster has had two different ME dogs and both are very different. He needs that special person who will look after him and make sure he stays and healthy and happy as he is now. He would love to have a playmate too.

He'd rather sit pretty for treats than run after sheep.Gordy is as handsome as they come! Panda is almost 2 years old. We found him and 2 others on the side of the road when they were about 3 months old. We took them in to foster for a short time to ensure that they were healthy and loved while the shelters were full. We are hoping to get him to a home where he will be able to run around, get his energy out and explore. He is very sweet, playful and loves attention and being pet. He gets along well with dogs and cats. He is also good around children. Panda has never been a single pet in a household so we are not sure how he will do as a solo pet. He is up to date on shots and does well at the boarding facility with other animals. Loves: -playing in water -getting toys out of the bin -getting treats for doing tasks -observing you cook -being on a schedule Dislikes: -eating around others

Meet Jack! Jack is a 9 year old border collie mix. Jack came to POLAR as a surrender. After spending some time roaming acreage, Jack was dropped off at the vet in rough shape. This, however, has not negatively affected him, as he has one of the biggest hearts. Jack develops a quick bond and loves being close to his person. He loved having his long coat brushed while watching TV. He is house, crate, and leash trained, does very well around other dogs and even cats, and can follow simple commands. Unfortunately, Jack does not display any interest in playing with balls or chewing on bones as his teeth have been worn down. Again, this lovable pup does not let adversity stand in the way and is still able to enjoy treats and hard kibble. Let me introduce you to Dakota, one of our newer residents at the Mesquite Animal Shelter picked up by one of our officers on 6/3. He weighs 60 pounds, is about 3 years old and is neutered. He is an Australian Kelpie mix. He is a stunningly attractive fellow with standup ears, a beautiful coat, and clear blue eyes. He knows the sit and paw commands. He will sit for treats and takes them politely. He showed off his athleticism by nimbly climbing up on our play equipment. He spent some time with his nose to the ground, checking out all the fascinating smells in the yard. He chased but did not return the tennis balls I threw. He is lively, spunky, and a happy-go-lucky boy. He has an outgoing and confident personality. Being a herding breed, he tries to herd the person who is walking him. This could be an issue if adopted into a family with very small children. He is a very likable boy and highly adoptable. Dakota is friendly and was happy for me to pet his soft, silky fur that has a sheen to it! Will you consider helping him out of the shelter?

This attractive girl is Bella, a mixed breed surrendered on 11/19 to the Mesquite Animal Shelter. Reason given for the surrender is that the owners are moving. Bella weighs 58 pounds and is about 2 years old. Owner stated that she lived inside and was good with their children ages 9, 11, and 16. She met me at the kennel door with happy tail wags, and walked nicely on a leash to the yard. In the yard I noted that she was restless, pacing, occasionally whining, and looking out the gate into the parking lot. I really feel as though she was looking for her people to come back to pick her up and take her home. It was heartbreaking to observe this behavior. She is uneasy in the shelter. She was not interested in the toys, balls or treats I offered her. Bella was friendly with me and allowed me to pet her. But again, her focus was on wanting out of the shelter and back with her people. Do you have place in your heart and home for this sweetheart? Would you allow her to live inside, stay committed to her and give her plenty of TLC?

Meet Strawberry! She is a 2 yr old spayed female Australian Cattle Dog that weighs 45lbs. She came into the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 11/23. She is a beauty! Being at the shelter with noise has made her a bit uncomfortable. Once she is out in a quieter environment her loving personality shines. She will need more decompression time as tho she likes to be petted but still cautious of what is happening around her. Due to this it would be best she be in a home with older children, and being familiar with the breed would be a plus. She is also a very smart girl. She knows the sit command, takes treats gently and loves to have you play with her. Each time I threw a toy, she would bring it back, drop it near me and look at me and the toy to tell me to throw it again. With her breed, having activities to keep her mentally busy, going for walks is just what she needs. On her right back knee it does protrude a bit and she will lay it to the side. She has been to a vet and confirmed there is no damage, possibly a birth defect. Further details can be provided by the shelter. She did not show any interest in the other dogs barking at her, but if there will be another dog in the home, please ask the shelter a dog test. This sweet girl deserves to have a loving home where she has a secured backyard to play in, but live indoors it what sweet Strawberry deserves. Please come meet her!
