Story
Meet Lilly, the border collie mix! This shy sweetheart came into the Shelter very unsure about new people and the world around her. A foster family took her in and she has really blossomed. They report: “Our girl is a sweetheart! She is cautious with of new people but warms up once she’s gotten to know them. She LOVES Bernard (the resident Great Pyrenees) and is respectful. Lilly has a favorite toy: the corduroy snowman! She absolutely loves it. She is great at using pee pads and not quite ready for prime time going outside in the yard.” Although Lilly has made great progress in her foster home, she is still more of the wallflower type and is looking for a dog savvy adopter. She gains a lot of confidence from being around other dogs so it is required she go to a home with other dogs who are looking for a youngin’ to be their shadow and join in on all of life’s adventures! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
!n Santa Cruz - Meet Ranger, a 8 year old Border Collie male. Ranger is is typical border collie who is playful and super smart. Ranger came to us after his owner passed away. He was loved but didn't get out too much. He was 1 of 4+ plus dogs and we think the dogs were left to their own devices. With this being said, Ranger can be nervous in public and is more of a homebody. Ranger can be good with other dogs when he gains trust with them but we think he be best suited for a home as the only pet (no cats). Ranger's ideal home would be: -a home where he can be a priority -a home experienced with border collies or other herding breeds -owners that are understanding of his sensitives in pubic -would be best suited as the only pet Ranger is a fun loving border collie but he also has an off switch! He is perfectly happy relaxing on the couch hanging out with his owners. Ranger will make his people very happy but they also need to be understanding of his background and manage his environment. Ranger is; fully house trained, has good house manners, no nuisance barking and is easy to live with. He also has some basic training under the right circumstances. Ranger is is neutered, up-to-date and microchipped. If you would like to learn more about this sweet guy, please submit an application. https://www.australianshepherdsfurever.org/adoption-application There is an additional $20 microchip fee which includes registration and transfer to his new furever family.

Story
Attention Border Collie Lovers!! Meet Pace. A 4 year old border collie male. Pace is your typical border collie who is active and super smart. Pace loves his people and is good with other dogs under the right circumstances. Pace came to us from an environment where he was left to his own devices but was loved on. Sadly, his owner passed away and he ended up in rescue. Pace is learning a lot and has bonded deeply with his foster. He also coexists well with the other dogs in the household. Pace loves car rides, walks and hiking! He does well in public but can get nervous and be skittish, but does warm up in time. Pace would be best suited for a home who has had border collies before as he has some BC- like traits including the following; a busy mind, can herd other dogs and need redirection, noise triggers and someone willing to manage and further navigate his integration into society. Pace is very sweet and has a "soft" personality. He really wants to do good and please his owner. Pace's Ideal Home -Someone who is home often -an active home -experienced with herding dogs -a committed home to work with furthering his training - a home with a yard -another dog might be a bonus on the other dogs temperament Pace is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines and is microchipped. If you would like to learn more about this sweet boy, please submit an application! https://www.australianshepherdsfurever.org/adoption-application There is an additional $20 microchip fee which includes registration and transfer to his new furever family.

Story
We have a wonderful 4-year-old border collie that we, unfortunately, can no longer keep. Since the arrival of our newborn, we’ve noticed that our dog's natural instincts—especially his tendency to bark at squirrels and other small animals in the yard—have been disturbing the baby’s sleep, leading to frequent fussiness and crying. This has been very stressful for our family, especially the father, and we’ve made the difficult decision to find him a new, loving home where he can thrive. Our top priority is ensuring he goes to a caring family who can provide him with the attention and environment he deserves.

Story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Sweet, affectionate boy!Puzzle is a 1.5 year-old, 28 pound, neutered Border Collie mix. Sweet Puzzle had a rough time in the shelter. He was losing weight, not eating, and had chronic stomach upset. Although the shelter had done lots of tests, nothing significant could be found, and he needed a rescue to provide more testing and support. After more testing and a change of food and regular probiotic, Puzzle is doing better! We expect he will need to stay on a special diet for the rest of his life, but otherwise he is a happy, healthy young dog! Puzzle currently lives with both larger and smaller dogs and has gotten along well with every dog he meets. He rides well in the car, is house trained, and walks beautifully on leash. While he can be nervous in a busy setting, Puzzle looks to his trusted humans for comfort. With a slow approach by new people, he quickly settles into a lap and gives the sweetest kisses! Puzzle had a rough 6 months in shelter life, but he is now ready and waiting for a forever home of his own where he can relax, settle in and blossom! Prior to adoption, all dogs are spayed/neutered, tested for heartworm, vaccinated (including rabies, if age appropriate) and microchipped.   Adoption fees for dogs: http://www.svpetproject.org/info/adoption  Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.March 4, 2025, 3:36 pm

Story
Vega is a 8 month old Cattle Dog mix. She is spayed, house trained, and up to date on vaccinations. Vega gets along with some dogs and cats. She isn’t great with young children but is fine with older children and adults. Vega is a highly intelligent, high energy, high drive dog. She is very focused, food motivated and easy to train. She really needs something to herd and to protect. She would thrive with chickens, goats, cows or literally anything to keep track of. She loves playing chase, tug, and going after the flirt pole, but she’s not very competitive and usually surrenders to her sister. She’s great at the obstacle course in our back yard. She knows basic obedience and more. Has an excellent recall and loves to bite at my heels while I race her on my bike. She leads the way on our creek walks and always finds the most efficient route around an obstacle. She’s got hops. She would do well with a runner or a hiker who stays off the beaten path.
