Story
Introducing Zaida! This sweet girl came to AFRP after she was found along the side of a road where a good samaritan stopped to help her. Now, she's thriving in foster care and ready to find her forever home! Zaida is your typical active girl, very treat-motivated and loving as can be! Her favorite things are giving kisses, playing ball and going for walks. Zaida loves being around and playing with other dogs and loves being the center of attention! She thoroughly enjoys belly rubs and tennis balls... ESPECIALLY enjoys tennis balls. She's not an apartment pup and will require a fenced-in yard to ensure she's able to have some space to get all of that energy out! Her daily routine is playing with her foster sisters, running around the backyard and loves small and large breeds alike. She is learning more every day and is continuing working on training and socialization with other dogs. Zaida would do just fine in a home with adult adopters or with families with dog-savvy children over the age of six but can get excited at times and we don't want her knocking over littles! While in our care, Zaida has been diagnosed with idiopathic head tremor syndrome (IHTS), a benign condition characterized by focal head tremors of unknown cause. While this condition is not fully understood, Zaida's continuous head and body tremors are managed as part of her unique journey. Tremors do resolve over time, but some, such as Zaida, have continuous head and body tremors. Alongside this, Zaida is currently taking long-term medication to help alleviate symptoms of anxiety, as well as OCD. Meet and greets can be arranged once your online application has been received and approved. Visit www.animalfriendsrescue.org for our required online dog application.

Sweet Fern is a little nervous when making new friends but given just a tiny bit of attention, she becomes fast friends with everyone she meets, never wanting to leave your side. We're quite obsessed with her whole body lean she does once comfortable. She's quite the charmer! Fern was found as a stray in a rural area of Monterey County and sadly no one came looking for her. We can't wait for this beautiful girl to bond with her people and blossom in time!

Story
Meet Lillie, the border collie mix! Lillie came into the Shelter as an owner surrender after her previous guardian was unable to continue caring for her. She lived in a home with a family including a child and cat (who took a bit of time for Lillie to coexist with). She would go for walks multiple times a day and also enjoyed playing with her dog friends. Her previous guardians described her as crate trained. Lillie is a smart cookie and already knows “sit”, “down” and “paw” (for both her left and right!). According to her previous guardian, Lillie does well riding in the car. She prefers not to be left alone and enjoys spending time with her people primarily. As companion animals, dogs often need desensitization to being left alone, especially after being adopted. Lillie’s guardians are recommended to provide mental and physical stimulation on a daily basis and work up (through gradual desensitization) to periods where she is left home alone after she has gotten her needs met for the day. In her previous home, Lillie did not love sharing her items (primarily high value chews) with people. Resource guarding is a normal behavior but does require environmental and behavior modification (for humans and dogs) to decrease chances of occurrence. Lillie is quite a cutie but would thrive with a dog-savvy adopter. Could that be you? Now through February 15th, we are hosting “Adopt Your Valentine” where adoption fees are reduced to $50. The adoption fee includes all age appropriate vaccinations, spay/neuter and microchips. Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Jane was adopted on April 20, 2019 in Denver Colorado. Her blood tests showed that she is primarily border collie. She’s always loved people and dogs and her only downfall was her overexcitement. During the day we both work and her and our other pup would stay home in the backyard. Jane began to jump the fence and get out of the yard while we were gone and we live near a busy street so there were some close calls with traffic. We tried a few things to keep her in but she is sneaky and could get out of a harness or collar and the invisible fence&collar also did not work. We heightened our fence and she still got over it. She has become aggressive toward some dogs especially when her fetch ball comes into it due to being caged up. Shes good with her lab brother and has never showed aggression toward our 1 and 4 year old kids. Shes a loving dog, we just want a better life for her and want her to be safe. She would make great pet for someone with room who is home often.

Story
!n Santa Cruz - Meet Ranger, a 8 year old Border Collie male. Ranger is is typical border collie who is playful and super smart. Ranger came to us after his owner passed away. He was loved but didn't get out too much. He was 1 of 4+ plus dogs and we think the dogs were left to their own devices. With this being said, Ranger can be nervous in public and is more of a homebody. Ranger can be good with other dogs when he gains trust with them but we think he be best suited for a home as the only pet (no cats). Ranger's ideal home would be: -a home where he can be a priority -a home experienced with border collies or other herding breeds -owners that are understanding of his sensitives in pubic -would be best suited as the only pet Ranger is a fun loving border collie but he also has an off switch! He is perfectly happy relaxing on the couch hanging out with his owners. Ranger will make his people very happy but they also need to be understanding of his background and manage his environment. Ranger is; fully house trained, has good house manners, no nuisance barking and is easy to live with. He also has some basic training under the right circumstances. Ranger is is neutered, up-to-date and microchipped. If you would like to learn more about this sweet guy, please submit an application. https://www.australianshepherdsfurever.org/adoption-application There is an additional $20 microchip fee which includes registration and transfer to his new furever family.

Story
Introducing Phantom! This sweet pup came into our care with his two siblings as a result of an accidental breeding. Phantom was born completely blind, but this doesn't slow him down! He is quite the gentle pup and uses those little ears of his to lead the way and he's adapted great to this new style of life. His foster let us know that Phantom has a knack for finding his way into your heart, as he'll happily sit or lay by, or even on your feet, offering a sense of comfort and warmth. His funny and playful nature will keep you entertained, and he's always up for a game of follow-the-leader, either by lead or scent. This water-loving pup is a true "water puppy," loving the joy of swimming and playing in the river. Blindness doesn't slow Phantom down; in fact, it adds to his charm and resilience. He navigates the world with grace and enthusiasm, proving that love knows no boundaries. His playful demeanor extends to other dogs, and he's known to be good with cats but would prefer a home with an experienced adult owner or a family with older children who have previously worked with special needs dogs (preferably blind dogs). His future owner would be someone who is home throughout the day with him, able to continue positive training and socialization for his safety. Pre-registration for general obedience classes is a requirement for adoption. Phantom is currently in foster care. Meet and greets can be arranged once your online application has been approved. Visit www.animalfriendsrescue.org for our online dog application.

Story
Looks like: Australian Shepherd mix Male, 2 years old (estimated), 71 pounds Smiley Koda is a large bundle of energy and love! He is a young gentleman with a heart of gold, interested in long walks (or runs!), and is looking for his forever adventure buddy! Koda does sit on command and but could benefit from a loving, patient, and firm guardian to teach him other basic commands and how to politely walk on leash. He gets along with other dogs but does tend to bark at dogs to let them know he wants to play when he is out on walks. This handsome boy would be a perfect fit for someone who is looking for a young energetic dog who enjoys exercise and lots of affectionate pets and love! Koda would not be a good fit in a home that has cats or children. Koda came to us after his senior guardian passed away.
