Story
Introducing Zaida! This sweet girl came to AFRP after she was found along the side of a road where a good samaritan stopped to help her. Now, she's thriving in foster care and ready to find her forever home! Zaida is your typical active girl, very treat-motivated and loving as can be! Her favorite things are giving kisses, playing ball and going for walks. Zaida loves being around and playing with other dogs and loves being the center of attention! She thoroughly enjoys belly rubs and tennis balls... ESPECIALLY enjoys tennis balls. She's not an apartment pup and will require a fenced-in yard to ensure she's able to have some space to get all of that energy out! Her daily routine is playing with her foster sisters, running around the backyard and loves small and large breeds alike. She is learning more every day and is continuing working on training and socialization with other dogs. Zaida would do just fine in a home with adult adopters or with families with dog-savvy children over the age of six but can get excited at times and we don't want her knocking over littles! While in our care, Zaida has been diagnosed with idiopathic head tremor syndrome (IHTS), a benign condition characterized by focal head tremors of unknown cause. While this condition is not fully understood, Zaida's continuous head and body tremors are managed as part of her unique journey. Tremors do resolve over time, but some, such as Zaida, have continuous head and body tremors. Alongside this, Zaida is currently taking long-term medication to help alleviate symptoms of anxiety, as well as OCD. Meet and greets can be arranged once your online application has been received and approved. Visit www.animalfriendsrescue.org for our required online dog application.

Story
Meet Honeysuckle!-4 month old male border collie x pyrenees mix!-Anticipated to be an XL sized dog (likely between 80 and 100lbs!). At four months old they are currently the same size as their mother-Surrendered to the Shelter after previous guardian was unable to continue caring for-Previously lived in a home with their mother dog, father dog, chickens, sheep and horses-When strangers would come over, they would bark to alert that they were there but then would become friendly and affectionate. This behavior can be fairly typical for livestock guardian breed dogs but may not be a great fit for all types of households. -Has seen other dogs in the property and would bark to alert that they were there but then would warm up and got along nicely-Has seen cats on the property and would bark and growl at them, seeming to be fearful of them-Outdoors only in previous home. Will need patience in the transition into their new home as a lot of human-centric things are new to them such as walking on a leash and house trainingNow through December 23rd – the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter is hosting “Home for the Holidays”. This adoption event reduces the adoption fee for all cats, rabbits and dogs to $50. Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Introducing Phantom! This sweet pup came into our care with his two siblings as a result of an accidental breeding. Phantom was born completely blind, but this doesn't slow him down! He is quite the gentle pup and uses those little ears of his to lead the way and he's adapted great to this new style of life. His foster let us know that Phantom has a knack for finding his way into your heart, as he'll happily sit or lay by, or even on your feet, offering a sense of comfort and warmth. His funny and playful nature will keep you entertained, and he's always up for a game of follow-the-leader, either by lead or scent. This water-loving pup is a true "water puppy," loving the joy of swimming and playing in the river. Blindness doesn't slow Phantom down; in fact, it adds to his charm and resilience. He navigates the world with grace and enthusiasm, proving that love knows no boundaries. His playful demeanor extends to other dogs, and he's known to be good with cats but would prefer a home with an experienced adult owner or a family with older children who have previously worked with special needs dogs (preferably blind dogs). His future owner would be someone who is home throughout the day with him, able to continue positive training and socialization for his safety. Pre-registration for general obedience classes is a requirement for adoption. Phantom is currently in foster care. Meet and greets can be arranged once your online application has been approved. Visit www.animalfriendsrescue.org for our online dog application.

Story
Looks like: Australian Shepherd mix Male, 2 years old (estimated), 71 pounds Smiley Koda is a large bundle of energy and love! He is a young gentleman with a heart of gold, interested in long walks (or runs!), and is looking for his forever adventure buddy! Koda does sit on command and but could benefit from a loving, patient, and firm guardian to teach him other basic commands and how to politely walk on leash. He gets along with other dogs but does tend to bark at dogs to let them know he wants to play when he is out on walks. This handsome boy would be a perfect fit for someone who is looking for a young energetic dog who enjoys exercise and lots of affectionate pets and love! Koda would not be a good fit in a home that has cats or children. Koda came to us after his senior guardian passed away.
