Story
Who remembers the cute little boy on the Andy Griffith show? What was his name? Oh right, OPIE. Well, OPIE is my name also. I may not be the redhead that Ronny Howard was back then, but I definitely have some ginger in my fur. Unfortunately, I did not have a Mayberry childhood like OPIE Taylor. But my foster mom has promised me that Happy Days are ahead. I wasn’t born in a small, sleepy town in North Carolina, but in a rural community in Southern Indiana. It is very clear that I didn’t have an Aunt Bee cooking for me. I was nothing but a bag of bones when I was found as a stray young ‘un around the age of 4 months. If Sheriff Taylor knew who I belonged to, he would have slapped my owners with an animal cruelty charge. It was touch and go for a while if I would pull through, but I had a great vet and wonderful people to care for me. Fast forward eighteen months. I am now a happy, healthy and inquisitive lad. The Humane Society in Indiana has been trying to help me find the perfect furever home for months. When the pickings were slim, Rover Rescue stepped in. My foster mom says that these families don’t know what they are missing. She thinks I am a mighty fine Black Mouth Cur / Retriever Mix. I am a great size, weighing in at a healthy 56 pounds. We think my two year old birthday is sometime in January. The wrinkles on my forehead make me look very concerned. However, I was told not to worry because I have the sweetest disposition. I am just a lovebug. I crave attention and will give affection back freely. I don’t believe in personal space. The closer I can be to my people the better. I will melt your heart with my adoring eyes. Some men have caused me to feel intimidated so I may need a little time to warm up. I do want to be a people and dog pleaser. Cats, not so much, as a kitty free home is probably best for me. I have done very well with the resident dogs in my foster home. I love to play, run around the fenced backyard and wrestle with them. I do not need to be the “top dog” but will butt in if loving is being given to another. Sharing a home with confident dogs has helped boost my self-esteem and teach me how to be a respectful house member. I caught on to house training very quickly with their help. I take treats very gently and will sit and shake when asked… most of the time. I ride calmly in the car and enjoy going on walks. An Easy Walk Harness has proven to help with my pulling. When I am home alone and at bedtime, I am crated. I crate very easily with a good snack. I may complain for a minute, but will then settle down until it is time to be released. If you are looking for sweet and loyal boy to take fishing and maybe get into some mischief with, please consider me, OPIE. My foster mom, Darla, can tell you more about me if you call her at 630/406-9405. My adoption fee is $225. Adoption fee includes: - microchip - spay/neuter - age appropriate vaccinations: Bordetella, DH(L)PP, rabies - heartworm preventive & flea/tick preventive - deworming
