Story
Alabaster is a skittish but sweet 4 year old bichon boy who loves cuddling with doggie friends and is still learning about the world outside of a cage after being rescued from a puppy mill. He needs a calmer adult home with at least one other small doggie friend to help him feel safe We hate puppy mills, but we love our puppy mill survivors ❤️ Most of our dogs come from local animal control facilities and homes that can’t keep them, but saving puppy mill dogs has always been a big part of our rescue’s mission over the past 20+ years. Since long before it was cool and every rescue and fake scam rescue around started buying up and selling supposed reject tiny mill puppies and flipping them for high adoption fees to make a profit, we have been rescuing and rehabilitating the sad scared semi-feral medically needy retired moms and dads. Our major life goal is to get dogs out of bad situations and into better ones, and few things are worse than puppy mill life, exploited in a cage for years on end with minimal human contact or medical care, just being used as breeding machines. It sounds like some type of dystopian horror story, but puppy mills are very real and common, kept alive by the selfish desire of consumers to be able to get a puppy of any breed or mix they want immediately shipped to them without caring about the consequences for the parents left behind. Some puppy mill rescues might have been treated slightly better than others and come to us in better shape emotionally and medically. But the vast majority of them (and the most challenging yet rewarding to help) come to us semi-feral and scared out of their minds of human touch, clinging to any doggie friend they can find as their only source of joy and security. They all have some challenges to overcome as they learn how to live in homes for the first time. Leash-walks, housebreaking, playing with toys, and cuddling are all foreign and scary concepts, but with time, patience, doggy role models, and the right caring patient people they learn at their own speed. We currently have 7 little non-shedding puppy mill survivors available, all 3-5 years old and varying levels of shyness. All REQUIRE another dog in the household to help them feel safe and have a role model and to look up to and copy (good habits and bad). Email njwoof@cs.com to meet any of our little survivors in northern NJ. If a puppy mill survivor isn’t the right match for you, we have lots of locally rescued dogs who have lived in homes, so please reach out to find a match Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.

Boo! 👻. Are you scared? You should be. He may look like the perfect cuddly little lapdog, but ChristoFUR is a demon in disguise. He’s not technically with our rescue, but we know him well and can vouch for his awfulness. He’s run up quite the rap sheet, culminating in his previous owner calling the cops at 5am to have his terrifying fluffy white 12 pound a#! removed from her home. After a year of being terrorized, and she signed a permanent restraining order against him and he ended up in doggy jail and homeless once again. We think his issues stem from being born the wrong breed- he has all the qualities of a great police patrol or personal protection dog, but no one is hiring a Maltese/Shih Tzu/Gremlin mix for that job unfortunately, and he’s just never gotten over his disappointment that no one appreciates how amazing he would be at his dream job. No one cowers in fear at his mighty bark- they laugh, tell him he’s an adorable little baby and try to pet him anyway which just makes this short angry little man even more enraged. Many things offend our little frenemy ChristoFURY. Top of the list: men, children, strangers, neighbors, interrupted nap time, delivery people, repairmen, vets, groomers, sharing food, being stared at, big or bouncy dogs, and many more. We are sure you will discover new things he hates as you navigate through life together. Remember back in 2020 when it was illegal to have parties, hug, or come within 6 feet of each other? He’s still busy enforcing those laws. Good times. Good times. He’s definitely got some good qualities although he won’t admit to them. He’s quite a charmer with the ladies and many don’t heed our warnings when they see his cute wagging tail and friendly dance, asking to be petted. He’s ok with most other small dogs, though he’s the fun police if they get too rambunctious and will yell at them to dial it down. He gives plenty of warning if you just learn his rules and listen to them. He’s a good little walker, non-shedding, smart, and a helpful co-worker who likes keeping your desk chair warm (and sometimes dancing around on your keyboard trying to type out some kind of message mankind probably isn’t ready to hear). When he’s in a happy mood he will bring you his toy and carry it around showing it off, though he’s not really asking for you to take it or a game of fetch. We think he’s about 8 years old, in pretty great health other than a mild heart murmur which doesn’t require medication at this time and we doubt will kill him anytime soon. He’s way too evil and has at least another 8 years of plotting to take over the world. We aren’t sure exactly what kind of home to advertise him to, and he doesn’t really know what he wants out of life at this point either and doesn’t seem eager to reflect and learn from his mistakes. He doesn’t make mistakes according to him, it’s all human error of not heeding his warnings of which he gives plenty. Like seriously, how many times does he have to tell you not to wake him up too early in the morning or lean over and kiss his head before bed before you learn your lesson?! That’s a YOU problem, if you incur his wrath he’s completely justified and has clearly documented his grievances with HR. He’s looking for a lady friend with a sense of humor and laid back attitude who won’t hold a grudge or be easily offended. He’s open to considering a humanoid AI robot too he can program to take orders from him, that would probably be ideal. (How far along are we on that technology? Hiring robots to adopt some of these dogs might be something we should look into 🤔). Other little chill dogs are ok as long as they can respect his space too. He definitely doesn’t need a wardrobe, and he’s scary enough that he definitely isn’t going to want to be dressed up for Halloween. Although he lets us put his Hannibal Lector muzzle on for grooming and vet visits. He’s open to learning to make more friends and accepts offers of chicken or cheese in exchange for his civility. But definitely isn’t going to be invited to any parties or greet the local school children getting off the bus. Long solitary walks in the woods and car rides to the drive-thru is more his speed. If you are still reading and for some reason thinking this sounds like a great dog to adopt, either make an appointment with a good therapist, or better yet, apply to adopt him at rbari.org Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge and we can broker a meeting with ChristoFURocious and see what happens… if you think you can “fix” him, don’t bother- those relationships never work out if you aren’t ready to accept each other flaws and all, and he’s done with trying to fit into society’s convention of what a “pet” should be and looking to live life on his terms. Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. Story
There are no holidays in rescue life… dogs don’t care and demand to eat, pee, and play no matter what day it is! We have been busy getting some of our newest emergency pre-Christmas surrenders settled in foster and recovered from their spay/neuter surgeries… including this sweetheart Shortcake! She’s an adorable real life Teddy Bear 🧸 (the made up designer name for a Shih Tzu/bichon mix so the pet store can sell them for a higher price 🤦‍♀️). But she barks way more than a stuffed animal and definitely needs more attention and regular grooming. She’s not even 2 years old and has already been through a couple of homes since her initial pet store purchase, most recently due to issues with the landlord. She’s a super sweet outgoing girl who still has puppy energy, craves attention and would love a home with someone around more often than not and will bark and cry at first when crated or left alone. She’s was housebroken in her previous home (though expect accidents with any new dog as they adjust to a new routine), and is a lovely good natured little non-shedding family companion. 14lbs full grown, spayed, updated on shots, and definitely looks more Bichon than Shih tzu. Story
Another discarded senior 😢. Meet Xavier. The time before the holidays is always filled with surrenders and abandonments, especially seniors. We will never understand the psychology of it- it seems to be some kind of combination of making room for the new Xmas puppies, starting the New Year with less responsibility, not wanting to have an ailing pet interfere with holiday plans… sometimes multiple factors. But it’s a phenomen we dread every year and why most seasoned rescuers grow quite Grinchy around the holidays 😖 So Xavier was turned into animal control by someone who supposedly “found” him, and (no shocker here) no one came looking for him. He looked like a ragged old bathmat, smelled like an ashtray, wasn’t bearing weight on one of his back legs, and his eyes were covered in crust. He is a complete sweetheart, happy and lovable despite his discomfort and neglect, and just craves human attention and sounds like a human baby crying if he’s ignored. He has a host of common but treatable/manageable old age issues- there really isn’t any body part on him that functions 💯. Let’s see: chronic dry eye, heart murmur, arthritis, old knee injury, early kidney disease, enlarged prostate, a bunch of crusty old dog wart growths, rotting falling out teeth and breath that can clear a room… is that enough? He’s happy, eating well, walking much better on pain medication, on meds to help his heart, a good boy for his longterm eye drops. He likes other little dogs (sometimes too much- he wasn’t previously neutered and actually that’s probably the only part that still works normally for now, but we will take care of that when he gets his dental. 👋 👋 🏀 🏀 Our motto is you are never too old for a Second Chance or a neuter 😆), though some dogs are a bit offended and annoyed by him until his hormones settle. His mind is still young and he has a lot of living left to do if he can get his body to cooperate, but he’s already getting around so much better and his tail is always wagging. He looks to be a poodle/bichon mix about 13lbs and probably at least 13 years old. If you love sweet old men that like to be spoiled and doted on, please email njwoof@cs.com to meet Xavier! Your donations this holiday season help us keep up with the never ending stream of little dogs of all ages being given up in the coming weeks 🥺 Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. Story
Well hello there! We’re Lacey and Lilac — a mother-daughter duo with matching hearts and wagging tails. I’m Lacey (darker markings), 8 years old, and my daughter Lilac (lighter markings) is 4½. We’re Bichon/Jack Russell mixes, about 17 pounds each, and we’ve been side by side our whole lives. Wherever one of us goes, the other follows — whether it’s curling up on the couch, going for a walk, or greeting new friends with happy tails. We’re sweet, loving, and full of personality. We adore people, are great with kids, and get along well with other dogs. We both walk nicely on a leash and love exploring together, but we’re just as happy snuggling up after a stroll. What we want most is to stay together. We’ve been each other’s comfort through everything, and we couldn’t imagine being apart now. If you’re looking for twice the love, twice the joy, and two perfect companions who already come as a team, we’re your girls! Thank you so much for your interest in adopting a dog from A New Chance Animal Rescue (https://anewchancear.org). We are a 501c3, tax deductible organization. ANCAR is a foster-based rescue, and we adopt within a 90 mile radius of Bedford Hills, NY. You will find the adoption application here: (https://anewchancear.org/adopt/adoption-application/). All fields on the application must be completed. Please read about the adoption process (https://www.anewchancear.org/adopt/our-adoption-process/) so you'll know what to expect when you submit. Our dogs are in foster care and we do NOT have a shelter or boarding facility. AN APPLICATION MUST BE COMPLETED IN FULL AND APPROVED BEFORE A DOG CAN BE MET. This is a firm policy. Our busy volunteers are not able to respond to questions about the dog or dog meeting requests in the absence of an application. We know these dogs very well because they are in foster care. Please read the profiles of the dog(s) you are interested in prior to submitting an application. If there are specific requirements stated (ie: Fenced Yard or Canine Friend Required) these are included because they are vital to the happiness, health, safety and adoption success of that dog. We are only able to save as many dogs as we have foster homes (https://www.anewchancear.org/foster/faqs/) and resources for. We provide medical care including vaccinations, testing, deworming, spaying/neutering and microchipping before transporting our dogs. We provide all supplies, preventatives and any follow up vet care necessary while they are in foster care. These costs are high and the number of lives we can save is entirely dependent upon donations from people like you. We do not receive funding from private foundations or government sources. If you can find room in your heart to help us, with any amount, we are truly grateful (https://www.anewchancear.org/help/donate/). We are a 501c3 organization, so all donations are tax-deductible. It is only through the kindness of supporters like you that we are 'changing lives...one tail at a time' by providing our dogs with 'A New Chance.' (https://anewchancear.org) Thanks so much.
