Say hello to beautiful Opal! This sweet girl is about 9 years old. She’s a rescued puppy mill mama Bichon. Like so very many of these so-called breeder releases (i.e. no longer producing sellable puppies so no longer of any value to the business operators) she is extremely timid and unsure of life outside of a locked box. She does not trust humans - and I don`t blame her one little bit. After many months in her foster home, she has made progress, but that progress is always guarded and often accompanied by a swift return to where she was before the progress (she`s a one step forward, two steps back kind of gal). She watches my every move with curiosity/suspicion, lol. She likes to be near the me and the pack when I`m home but doesn`t necessarily want to cuddle in with us. She`s more of a `I`ll be over here watching you, but you can reach over and pet me if you want,` type of pup. She does get excited when I get home from work and will sometimes do zoomies in the yard with the big boys, but she doesn`t want me bursting her fun bubble by trying to get too close. I have built trust with her to the point where she wants to be by me, wants me to pet her, lets me do anything I need to do with her (besides go for a walk), but she is usually still nervous during it all. Heartwarming are the times when she is truly relaxed and enjoying some love from me - those times are slowly building in frequency. Love and patience are paying off.
