Story
Hey there, I’m Leiah! Now, don’t let my 10-month-old floofy, teddy-bear(aka as a Berndedoodle) vibes fool you—I've got some big thoughts in this little 40-pound package. I’m what you’d call a “sophisticated introvert,” which means I bond super hard with my people but tend to treat everyone else like they’re auditioning for the privilege. Let’s just say I warm up best to the ladies and kids, and as for men...well, let’s just say my foster dad still gets the ol' "Leiah dart and dodge." Which I guess is why I landed in rescue. You see, I came from a home where let’s just say, I wasn’t exactly feeling secure—especially when it came to the men. My previous owner’s husband? Oh boy. I didn’t really like him much (I might have even given him the cold shoulder… or the cold sprint away from him) and I think the feeling was mutual and that he didn't really like me either. Honestly, I just felt scared and unsure around him, and it made everything a bit stressful. So, to ease tensions for everyone, my mama ended up surrendering me to PPFT's fluffy butt family. So, let’s talk about the kind of home I’m looking for, shall we? First off, I could totally rock the solo dog life. I mean, I’m a low-key girl who can enjoy some me-time just fine. But, I’m also down for a doggy sibling or two! So, if you’ve got other dogs, I’m cool with that. As for cats? Yep, I’m good with them. I mean, they don’t get me as excited as squirrels do, but we’re cool. I’ll just give them the respectful side-eye and go about my day. And kids? Oh, I love them! I mean, they’re like mini humans with more snacks and less judgment. I’m all about those little ones who can give belly rubs and know how to keep things fun. You’ll catch me snuggling up with them and soaking up all the love I can get. If you’re thinking about adopting me (which, I mean, who wouldn’t?), you need to know something: I’m gonna need a little patience. I’m sweet as can be, but I don’t just hand out trust and snuggles like candy. And if you’ve got men in the house, well… they might have to work for it. You know how some dogs lose their minds when dad comes home? They’re all “WOOHOO, IT’S DADDY!” and just toss mom aside like a forgotten tennis ball? Yeah, not me. When dad walks in, I’m like, “Uh… okay, let’s slow this down a little. I’m gonna need to make sure you’re worth my love before I jump into full cuddle mode.” So, if you’re a guy, expect to earn my affection the old-fashioned way: with patience, treats, and time. I promise, once I trust you, you’ll have the best cuddle buddy ever. When it comes to meeting new people... oh boy. I’ll be honest, I tend to make a quick exit and run away. I’m shy at first—like, really shy. But with a little time and a lot of treats (seriously, I’m a sucker for treats), I’ll start to warm up and show my true, sweet self. Now, if you're thinking of taking me on public outings—whether it’s a cute café, a pet store, or visiting friends—I’m totally down! I’m the perfect little companion who’s always up for some socializing (once I get used to you and them, of course). I might be a little shy at first, but once we’re out there, I’m all in. Who doesn’t want to check out the world with their favorite human? But hey, don’t worry if you’re more of a homebody! I’m totally cool with just hanging out at home, too. The couch, snacks, and a cozy blanket are basically my happy place. You can count on me to be your best stay-at-home buddy. As for leash walks... well, we’ve got some work to do. I’m not exactly a leash-walking pro yet, and I tend to get a little nervous and hunker down when the leash comes out. But give me a little patience, and I’ll get there! After all, I’m a smart cookie—I just need to figure out this whole "walking like a civilized dog" thing. Alright, let’s talk about car rides. I’m not the type to just hop in and chill—nope, I need a lift up there (I’m a bit of a princess, it’s fine). Once I’m up, though, you’ll catch me sitting tall and proud, looking out the window like I’m on a VIP tour of the world. Maybe I’m hoping for a squirrel sighting... or maybe I’m just contemplating life. Oh, you wanna know about my temperament? Well, let me give it to you straight: I’m a play-all-day kind of gal when it comes to the other dogs! Seriously, if it involves running, chasing, or even a little zoomie action, count me in. Other dogs? They’re my besties—well, most of the time. I mean, sometimes they get all crazy and I’m like, “Whoa there, buddy, can we not with the wildness?” But overall, I’d happily play with them until the cows come home. Or until my paws get tired, whichever happens first. Now, about this “fetch” thing everyone keeps talking about... I’ve heard the word, but, um, what exactly am I supposed to do with the ball? You throw it, I look at it, and then... what? You want me to bring it back to you? Pfft I’m just here for the fun, not the manual labor. And as much as I love a good game of chase or tug-of-war, I’m also the sensitive type. I want to be loved by my humans so badly, but sometimes... well, let’s just say I get a little shy. I’ve been through a lot, and sometimes I need to take a step back to make sure you’re cool enough to get the honor of my cuddle. But once you’ve earned it, get ready for the fluffiest, sweetest love ever. It’s like a VIP pass to the "Leiah Snuggle Club." So, I’ve got some important details you might wanna know about me. First up: apartments? Yep, I’m totally cool with that! I mean, who doesn’t love a cozy space where you can just chill? As long as there’s a little room to stretch and a human to snuggle, I’m good to go! I’m not one of those loud, look at me dogs, so I won’t be shaking the whole building with my amazing vocal range. Now, when it comes to potty training… well, let’s just say I’m a work in progress. I’m not quite there yet, but I’m smart, so I’m picking it up! And if there’s a doggie door in the mix? Oh yeah, I’ve got that mastered.. I’m also kennel trained. As for the couch—nope, not my thing. I mean, I appreciate a good cuddle, but I’m more of a "chill in my own space" kind of dog. No couch hijacking here! Now, my barking—well, let's just say I’m not a constant yapper. But when the other dogs get going, I’m ready to join in. I like to think of it as “Guardian Mode Level 2.” I’m not the first one to start the noise, but if it’s happening, I’m ready to support my squad. So, yeah, I’m not going to just fall for you right away. If you’re looking for a dog who’s ready to love on you immediately, I might not be the one for you. And I am still working on some of my house manners. But if you’re the type who’s got the time, patience, and the determination to work for a dog’s love, then I’ll be so worth it. Stick with me, and we’ll be a team—just give me the time to trust you, and I promise you’ll have the most loyal, snuggly Bernedoodle ever. Oh, and just to make this crystal clear: I’m not the "until something happens" kind of dog. I want to be your forever dog. So if you’re the type who might suddenly decide you’ve got "too much going on," or "a new job that takes all your time," or maybe you're moving to a place where I can't come—well, that’s just not gonna work for me. I’ve got a big heart, and I want to fill it with a family who’s in it for the long haul. So what happens next? Well, I would hope that you would submit an adoption app for me. You can find the app on the rescue's website, message them for it, or find it in the comments below. I am being fostered in ✨Hutchinson, KS,✨ so if you live outside the area..no worries. Just be prepared to pack for a road trip because this rescue doesn't send us on transports. So, both they and I will be expecting you to come pick me up. And what better way to start the bonding process than with a road trip?!
