Story
You wouldn't think it'd be so hard to find a foster or adopter for a beautiful young mal, but here we are posting time and time again over the last few months with absolutely no interest in our girl Phoenix! Abandoned at just 8 months old—pregnant, scared, and left on an elderly man’s property in Corpus Christi, TX—her journey has been nothing short of remarkable. She was rescued just 24 hours before going into labor, and despite being a baby herself, Phoenix gave birth to seven puppies. While not all survived, she fulfilled her motherly duties and is now ready for her Second Start in life. Phoenix is a 1-year-old Malinois mix with the energy and drive typical of her breed. She’s incredibly smart, eager to learn, and has the potential to excel at activities like agility, nose work, or obedience training. Her foster mom says she’s a quick study and loves a good challenge. She can sniff out treats like a pro and thrives on both physical and mental stimulation. Phoenix is already crate trained and house trained, though she may need a day or two to adjust to a new environment. While she does well with other dogs, she isn’t the biggest fan of cats, so a cat-free home is ideal--though she is learning to co-exist with them. Phoenix’s ideal family is active and experienced, ready to help her channel her boundless energy into fun and fulfilling activities. Whether it’s hiking, mountain biking, or long runs, she’s the perfect fitness partner. Puzzle toys and training sessions also keep her sharp and happy. Let’s get Phoenix on the road to Virginia and into the loving home she deserves! If you’re ready for a loyal, active, and intelligent companion, Phoenix might just be your perfect match.

Story
My owners left me on a street corner in the RGV, all alone. I’ve been here ever since, refusing to leave, waiting for them to come back. But they never do. This spot is a known dumping ground. There are no houses nearby, no reason for me to stay—except that it’s the last place I saw my family. I don’t understand why they left me, so I sit and wait, watching the cars pass by, hoping one of them will be the one that takes me home. I would howl at every car that drove by, begging for someone to notice me. That’s when a kind person stopped and brought me food. Now I'm with Second Start Rescue. I have so much love to give, won't you take a chance on me?

Story
Meli is a loving, energetic, and playful dog who was rescued from a shelter in the DC area. Born in July 2023, she is now about a year and a half old and full of life. Unfortunately, due to recent changes in my circumstances, I am no longer able to provide Meli with the care and attention she deserves. I believe she would thrive in a home where she can receive the time, love, and dedication she needs to live her best life. Meli truly is a special companion, and she will bring so much joy to her future family.

Story
Hello, Belgian here, and I am (you guessed it!) a Belgian Malinois. While I don`t expect you to brush up on your Flemish Dutch, I would love it if you learned some about Belgian Malinois before we finalize our adoption. A few Cliff Notes here: I like to work (I know this may sound odd, but it`s true). My breed is valued by police departments and militaries for its strength and stamina, its dexterity, its loyalty, and its eagerness to please. What this means is: If I get exercise and enrichment and training (plenty of each), I`ll be a fantastic companion.I was found as a stray, so the shelter doesn`t know much about me. It took me a moment to settle in here, but I have already demonstrated that I can warm up easily to new people. So, if you have an interest in exploring a rich life together -- whether you speak Flemish or not -- let`s get started today!

These pups are in Rockville, Maryland too!

Story
Do you have any tennis balls to play with? Lacy is a lovely 4 year old Shepherd/hound mix who loves people and loves to play ball! This 50 pound lady is a fan of head scratches and wants to be with you all the time. She is crate trained and great in the house. She has a low prey drive, and had previously lived with a cat. She would be very happy to be the only dog in the house as well. The adoption fee for this dog is $425 which includes routine vetting and spay/neuter.
