Story
Meli is a loving, energetic, and playful dog who was rescued from a shelter in the DC area. Born in July 2023, she is now about a year and a half old and full of life. Unfortunately, due to recent changes in my circumstances, I am no longer able to provide Meli with the care and attention she deserves. I believe she would thrive in a home where she can receive the time, love, and dedication she needs to live her best life. Meli truly is a special companion, and she will bring so much joy to her future family.

Story
Hello, Belgian here, and I am (you guessed it!) a Belgian Malinois. While I don`t expect you to brush up on your Flemish Dutch, I would love it if you learned some about Belgian Malinois before we finalize our adoption. A few Cliff Notes here: I like to work (I know this may sound odd, but it`s true). My breed is valued by police departments and militaries for its strength and stamina, its dexterity, its loyalty, and its eagerness to please. What this means is: If I get exercise and enrichment and training (plenty of each), I`ll be a fantastic companion.I was found as a stray, so the shelter doesn`t know much about me. It took me a moment to settle in here, but I have already demonstrated that I can warm up easily to new people. So, if you have an interest in exploring a rich life together -- whether you speak Flemish or not -- let`s get started today!

Story
Varro, affectionately nicknamed "Bucket Head," has a story that breaks your heart. Rescued in April 2024 from the streets of Cleveland, TX, he was found wandering with a bucket stuck on his head. How he survived without suffocating or starving is nothing short of a miracle. A dedicated street feeder and her husband spent 12 hours trying to save him, eventually needing to tranquilize him to bring him to safety. Since that day, Varro has been in boarding, waiting for someone to see past his fear and give him the love he’s always deserved. Varro is understandably nervous around humans—after everything he’s endured, who can blame him? But he’s dog-friendly and has the potential to thrive in a quiet, patient home where he can learn to trust again. We don’t know if it’s because he’s a boy, or if he’s fallen victim to “black dog syndrome,” but people seem to look right through him. Despite dozens of pleas, no one has stepped forward for this sweet boy. We refuse to give up because we know there’s someone out there who would love to be Varro’s best buddy.

Story
You wouldn't think it'd be so hard to find a foster or adopter for a beautiful young mal, but here we are posting time and time again over the last few months with absolutely no interest in our girl Phoenix! Abandoned at just 8 months old—pregnant, scared, and left on an elderly man’s property in Corpus Christi, TX—her journey has been nothing short of remarkable. She was rescued just 24 hours before going into labor, and despite being a baby herself, Phoenix gave birth to seven puppies. While not all survived, she fulfilled her motherly duties and is now ready for her Second Start in life. Phoenix is a 1-year-old Malinois mix with the energy and drive typical of her breed. She’s incredibly smart, eager to learn, and has the potential to excel at activities like agility, nose work, or obedience training. Her foster mom says she’s a quick study and loves a good challenge. She can sniff out treats like a pro and thrives on both physical and mental stimulation. Phoenix is already crate trained and house trained, though she may need a day or two to adjust to a new environment. While she does well with other dogs, she isn’t the biggest fan of cats, so a cat-free home is ideal--though she is learning to co-exist with them. Phoenix’s ideal family is active and experienced, ready to help her channel her boundless energy into fun and fulfilling activities. Whether it’s hiking, mountain biking, or long runs, she’s the perfect fitness partner. Puzzle toys and training sessions also keep her sharp and happy. Let’s get Phoenix on the road to Virginia and into the loving home she deserves! If you’re ready for a loyal, active, and intelligent companion, Phoenix might just be your perfect match.

If so, Akiro might be the perfect addition to your family. Akiro is a sweet, shy boy who has faced more than his share of challenges. This gentle soul needs a special kind of adopter—someone who can provide the time and care required to help him overcome his fears and become the confident, loving companion he’s meant to be. Akiro will thrive best with someone experienced in handling anxious dogs. He needs a patient and understanding approach as he builds trust at his own pace. A calm and steady home environment will help him feel secure, and a predictable routine will make him more comfortable and confident. Positive reinforcement training is crucial for helping Akiro work through his fears. With gentle guidance, he can learn to approach new experiences with greater ease. Building trust with Akiro is a gradual process, so a dedicated owner who is committed to spending quality time with him and introducing him to new things slowly is essential. Once Akiro feels safe, he will reveal his deep affection and loyalty. His gentle nature will shine through as he begins to trust you. He enjoys quiet moments and will thrive in a serene home environment where he can relax and feel at ease. Important Note: Commitment Required Due to Akiro’s sensitive nature and the dedication needed for his development, we are not accepting returns for him. Akiro’s progress is delicate, and it’s essential that he finds a stable, committed home where he can continue his journey without interruption. Akiro needs an owner who is ready to invest in his training and socialization. Moving between homes can disrupt his progress, lead to separation anxiety, and hinder his development. If you’re prepared to offer Akiro a stable and loving environment and are committed to his ongoing growth, we invite you to consider adopting him. Your dedication will play a crucial role in helping Akiro become the confident and happy companion he’s meant to be. __________________________________If you are interested in meeting a dog or cat, we require an adoption application.Apply to adopt at: www.nerdypaws.org Nerdy Paws Animal Rescue is a foster based rescue in Springfield, VA. We do not have a shelter, all of our animals are in foster homes. We require all potential adopters to fill out an application before setting up a meeting with the animal and their foster family.
