Story
Just a short time ago, Alex was chasing a garbage truck down the street because that seemed like a perfectly solid strategy for survival. The truck probably smelled like something vaguely edible, and Alex probably hadn't eaten in a while.A kind woman stepped in before that plan ended badly and brought him to safety in Sussex. Now he is here with us, looking slightly bewildered that life has shifted from “outrun large vehicles” to “soft blanket and breakfast.”Alex is a four-year-old tricolor blue tick beagle with the kind of eyes that make you want to wrap him in soft things. He is heartworm positive and already in treatment, fully covered by Animal Aid Society, even after he goes home. Here is what courage looks like in a 30-pound dog:He crouches. He closes his eyes.He leans forward, just a little. And he tries. He tries because he wants to believe you are good. When he realizes you are, he quietly folds himself into your lap like he's finally home. It is not dramatic. It is a small exhale. A body deciding, maybe for the first time in a long time, that it's safe.Alex is just a smidge shy. But once he understands your hands are kind and not harmful, he melts. He looks up at you as if the idea is still surprising: you want to be nice to me?Yes. We do.Come meet Alex at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA.Visiting hours are daily from 9 AM to noon, weekends and holidays included.Interested? Story
It took all of his 43 days with us but it finally happened - Marty will now finally come and take treats out of our hands. And it brings us endless joy.Marty is a bit cautious and timid when we are watching, but he is a fun-loving beagle when no one is watching. He and his buddy, Alex, were found as strays - they were chasing a trash truck. They were probably wondering why that great big truck was taking all of their potential food away.Once at our shelter, Alex became Mr. Personality, while Marty watched us all with a cautious eye. Slowly, Marty realized that great things came along with us - like lots of food and treats and toys, not to mention a warm room with lots of blankets on the bed.And with this new realization, Marty started to seem happy when he saw us. Instead of running away from us, he would ever so slowly approach us. And then he just couldn't help himself - when he realized we had treats in our hand, he said yes, please.Marty is a sweet and soulful four-years-old. He loves to sniff and sniff and sniff. And now he will even endlessly sniff us! If you have patience and you love a great reward, Marty is your guy. Few things are more satisfying than earning the trust of a shy dog. Please come meet the amazing and magical Marty!Come visit Marty and his friends at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton VA. Open daily between 9AM and noon!Interested? Story
Hello, Dolly!Dolly is a healthy four-year-old Beagle who recently retired from a hunt club after demonstrating that the only thing she hunts is love. And snacks. She's extremely skilled at locating snacks. While other Beagles were tracking deer or rabbits through the woods, Dolly appears to have been conducting operations in a different field entirely: identifying the human most likely to provide belly rubs and possibly a small snack.Dolly is a chonky 29 pounds, which in Beagle math is the perfect size for snuggling. She comes equipped with the classic Beagle wiggle, which activates instantly the moment someone looks her way. You glance at Dolly, and suddenly her entire body lights up like fireworks over a barbecue.Dolly adores humans. All of them. Tall ones, short ones, crawling ones, people sitting quietly minding their own business. In Dolly’s view, every person is simply a friend she hasn't wiggled at yet. She's equally enthusiastic about dogs, and approaches them with the confidence of a small, joyful ambassador who expects everyone to get along.Mostly, though, Dolly just wants to be where the love is. A couch. A lap. A family that will appreciate the important services she provides, including companionship, enthusiastic tail wagging, and advanced snack detection. So hello, Dolly.Yes, hello, Dolly.Soon we’ll have you back where you belong -- in a loving home.Animal Aid Society is located at 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA. Story
Viola is a beautiful soul that we think is about 3 year old  and a Beagle mix girl. This black and white beauty with adorable speckled legs and a sweet She only weighs 20 lbs and has the sweetest smile and absolutely loves people. She was found as a stray that was taken to the shelter very scared and almost shutdown while there. Her human mother died and Viola is now 5 years old. Unfortunately we don’t really know her story, but we feel there is some trauma there in her past. It takes her a little bit to get used to people and even longer for dogs. She wants a safe place to observe (wire crate suggested)  till she figures it out. Her foster kept her behind a gate and her bed was her safe place. For a few days she would growl through the gate at the other dogs but after that it was over. We would leave the gate open and she would venture out and if she got nervous she would go back to her safe place. She is never ugly to the other dogs at her foster and  if one of the Chihuahuas was mean to her,  she just ignored her. We have her using puppy pads because there is  no fenced yard. Viola would definetly need a fenced yard so she can safely explore and have potty breaks. The outdoors makes her nervous still. She loves her people immensely and adores  kids but older ones are best.  If you want to help and REALLY rescue a dog them Viola would be forever indebted to you.    If you are interested please email at ccrtennessee@gmail.com    PLEASE NOTE:  Our dogs are transported from Tennessee to meeting places in the states where we have posted.  Further information about us is given on our Adopt-A-Pet site.  The adoption fees vary and will be provided as well as noted on the application you receive.  Contact us at 615-661-5333 or ccrnewengland@gmail.comMarch 7, 2026, 12:24 pm
