Here's what the humans have to say about me:
An Opal gemstone is said to be many things including the most powerful of healing stones, the stone of hope, the stone of great achievement and even the "stone of the gods." We feel our little Opal is all of those things wrapped up in a 19-pound package of sheer joy.
Opal’s life before coming to MHCSR was most likely not the greatest. All indications point to her having been used for breeding and, when she was no longer needed most likely due to her age, she was found wandering alongside a busy highway matted, thin, scared and infested with fleas. She was taken to a local no kill shelter where she was evaluated, received immediate treatment for her fleas and groomed.
Opal was never reclaimed, which was no surprise. The shelter knew her chance for a better life would only come by being placed with a rescue in order for her to receive the veterinary care and time she needed to recover. What makes this story so heartbreaking is that Opal is at least10 years of age and does have some hearing loss. We cannot imagine how scared this poor little girl must have felt along this busy highway unable to hear a vehicle coming her way that could have taken her life in an instant.
Since coming to MHCSR she has been spayed, received a dental and brought up to date on her vaccinations. Her blood work was good and she is heartworm negative.
Her foster mom tells us that she is fearful of the car, is learning to walk on leash, is fine with other dogs and enjoys her very own comfy bed to snuggle up in. Opal has conquered the doggie door and is very proud of herself. She is shy and will take time to warm up to strangers, which is a very common personality trait of shelties, but once she realizes you are her friend you will see her tail wag with excitement. Opal is a quick learner and very smart!
We feel Opal would do best in a quiet adult home with people who will be able to devote their time and energy in showing her what a dog’s life should be. In return she will show you the gratitude of giving back.
Maybe you are reluctant to adopt a senior dog because you fear that your time with your new best friend will be short, bringing that painful time of loss closer. But the privilege of loving a senior dog like Opal makes every single day special, as you and she share love, friendship, and a special relationship that grows stronger with the knowledge of knowing that you have given Opal a second chance at life. The love that grows from this knowledge is stronger than the pain of eventual separation.
