Update - 11/29 - Lance has improved greatly, and is now expected to make a complete recovery! He still has a long way to go, but is heading in the right direction. He lost weight he could not afford to lose during his illness, but now has a hearty appetite, so he should gain it back in no time.
Lance's medical bills, to date, are nearly $1100, and he still needs to be treated for heartworm disease (another $300+). Lance WILL receive the treatment he needs, and we will find him the very best forever home we can. But cases like this have completely drained all our resources. Our rescue is small, and our adoption fees are the only source of revenue we have. $250 does not go very far on a bill of $1000+. All other expenses come out of our own pockets, and they are more than empty.
Please consider making a donation to help Lance and others like him receive the second chance at life that they deserve. Candy, another of our rescues, needs hip surgery that will cost almost $2000. Tara, like Lance, has heartworm disease, and needs treatment. Without the support of our community, we will not be able to continue to help these wonderful dogs. Already we've had to close intake indefinitely, so we can focus on the dogs already in rescue and meet their needs. So please consider this holiday season, giving the gift of life to a wonderful GSD that might not otherwise have a chance.
Update - 11/13 - Lance is slowly improving, but is not out of the woods yet. He had a minor relapse and had to return to the clinic for IV fluids, but will back home tomorrow. At this point, his medical bills are nearing $800. Lance's holiday wish is that other dogs like him be given the same second chance at life. But without your help, that may not be possible. His unexpected medical needs have seriously drained our finances. So if you've been thinking about making a donation to a charity as the year comes to a close for a tax break, now is the time. Please help us continue to help Lance and others like him.
Update - 11/6 - Lance went in yesterday to begin his heartworm treatment, and routine bloodwork revealed a very serious liver problem, bordering on liver failure. Our vet does not believe this is related to the HW, as x-rays and tests showed a very light infestation. It is believed at this time that the problem is the result of either a severe infection within the liver, or chronic liver disease. We'll know more by the end of the week, after further bloodwork results come in and we see how he responds to IV fluids and antibiotics.
Please keep Lance in your prayers as he fights for his life. We'll post updates as they are available. If you'd like to make a donation to help offset some of the costs of his extensive medical care, please email us for the name and address of his doctor. Thank you.
Meet Lance! Lance is a gorgeous, sweet, 2.5 year old male GSD. He was found wandering the strets by a good samaritan, who was unable to locate his former owners, so they called GSD rescue to give him a second chance in life!
Lance is a very affectionate boy who wants to be right with you all the time. As you can see by his third picture, he absolutely adores children. He also gets along well with other dogs. Cats are unknown at this time.
Lance is about 15 pounds underweight currently, and has a very large frame, so he's going to be a large dog. He also unfortunately tested positive for heartworm disease, but will begin treatment next week. He will have a clean bill of health in no time!
Lance is utd on routine vaccinations and flea/tick prevention. Hehas been neutered and microchipped.
Please Click Here to fill out an application. This is the first step in our adoption process. No adoption will be considered or discussed until this has been completed and received.
Lance must go to an indoor home where he will be an important part of the family. We do not adopt to anyone under the age of 21.
Note: Mid-South Shepherd Rescue is a no-kill, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We do not have a shelter location. Our dogs are kept in foster homes as part of a family, to help prepare them for transition into their forever homes. If you are interested in meeting one of our dogs, please contact us by clicking on the email address to your right. We will be glad to make arrangements for a meeting.

As of November 29, 2007, the balance on our vet bill is $5,534.62. This is JUST our primary vet bill, and does not include other daily expenses, as well as additional medical bills for some of our dogs who need to see specialists (for example, orthopedic surgeries). These costs are mounting daily, as we are always testing, spaying/neutering and heartworm treating new dogs as they come into rescue. Our adoption fee of $250 is the ONLY funding source we have, and it doesn't go very far when some of our rescues have bills of $1000+. Please help us continue to help them. Tax deductible donations an be made by clicking the following link, or by snail mail to:
MSSR, P.O. Box 542, Nesbit, MS 38651. NO amount is too small. If you think you can't make a difference, think again!
