My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

** My darling Oscar, after a long term problem with an excessive cough and breathing problems, passed away in my arms 3 weeks ago. He was given wonderful vet care by my vets at the North Loop Pet Clinic and Gulf Coast Vet Clinic, but suddenly took a turn for the worst that day.

Despite being an aggressive dog in the shelter where he was picked up, Oscar seemed to know from day one that I was there to help him and he had absolute trust in me that I would never hurt him. Our bond became so strong that I considered him to be my dog.

As he passed, I tried to revive him because I wasn't ready to let him leave me, but then decided to stop and to let him go so he would no longer be in pain. As I cradled him and kissed him with tears flowing down my cheeks, I told him he would always be my dog and I loved him even more than I ever realized and to go to the light. I told him that I wanted him to be happy and free of pain and for him to some day be waiting for me at Heaven's gate when I pass so we can be together again.

I miss Oscar terribly but know he is in a better place now. Be happy my dear Oscar Meyer! You always were a special boy to me!

Oscar was rescued due to the shelter having a tough time handling this stray dog. When I got him, he was covered with spiny burrs (100's of them!) even in his toepads and privates! I had to carefully pick them off and Oscar allowed me to do this even though he was in such pain - I think he knew I was trying to help him! Oscar gently licked my arm after this to let me know that he appreciated all my help!

Oscar can be a little growly when you nudge him when he has been sleeping or when a young pup falls on him while playing but otherwise gets along with the other dogs! That growly behavior and his horrible coat condition when I got him earned him the name Oscar from Sesame Street! He reminds me so much of that muppet!

Oscar is about 10 pounds and his fur has grown in so lush! He is considered more on the senior end of the adult years - he is missing a few teeth but eats dry food well! He runs when I call him and runs in the house after having his outside time in my securely fenced yard with the other poms. He does have a periodic cough which my vet believes is due to a heart murmur, which I have a very reasonable prescription that I periodically give him as needed. It costs $10.00 and lasts 1 - 2 months.

He is sensitive about his rear feet being touched and his belly (maybe due to those burrs!) but as he gets to know and trust you he is fine and I can easily give him a bath! He does not like needles, like a lot of us humans, and can scream and holler at the vets when he gets his shots - so I always prepare the vet for that!

He loves my cat and is very inquisitive about her. He is the first dog to run up and greet new people. He loves doggy treats!!!

If you are interested in hearing more about Oscar or meeting him - he is fostered in the NW Houston area. His foster mom is Lisa and she can be reached at LMcGrat@citgo.com or 215 275 0483 cell.
