Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Dash is a very sweet affectionate 6 month old Yellow male whose heart is as beautiful as his soft, brown eyes. While Dash has the spirit and tail-wagging nature that makes Labradors the wonderful companions they are, he was born with congenital megaeosophagus (see link below) and will need a special home with people who can give him the care he needs.
Dash's litter brother who was diagnosed with the same disorder...outgrew it with early medical intervention. Unfortunately, for Dash his first adopters never had a dog before and were ill- prepared for a dog with medical issues. Dash's illness was sadly never addressed, and when he came into rescue he was severely dehydrated and malnourished. In lay terms, Dash's esophagus is malformed and because of the lack of medical care..the condition only worsened. The condition primarily presents as a gastrointestinal disorder because of the inability to digest food properly. Dash needs to be fed in smaller quantities, 3 times a day...with his food bowl elevated and his food needs to be blended. After eating he has to have some quiet time in his crate, or he likes to nestle on his foster Dad's shoulder. Dash needs a home that has time to manage this condition. When Dash came into rescue he was extremely underweight. With proper care and attention to a feeding protocol...he has gained almost 10 lbs. in 6 weeks!! We are hoping that someone with a big heart and time to invest will embrace this special little guy. We ask that anyone interested in Dash, please review the following website: http://www.caninemegaesophagus.org
There are many contributions by veterinarians and owners of dogs with this condition on the site. With proper management and diet....most dogs with this disorder live a normal lifespan. Dash has no idea that there is anything wrong with him. He loves his toys and playtime especially with his foster sister. He has a fantastic temperament...loves & charms everyone. He is curious, willing to learn and loves to cuddle. If you think that you might be a good match for Dash please contact by e-mail at: labrescuect@aol.com for more information and of course to meet this very special little guy.
