Here's what the humans have to say about me:
UPDATED 7/2/2013: Rambo is an approximately 3-4 year old purebred intact Norwegian Elkhound who was picked up roaming stray. Thanks to the help of neighbors who recognized him on our Facebook page, his owner was quickly identified. Initially, they said they would reclaim him but, weeks later, they finally decided they, indeed, no longer wanted him. From what we gathered from neighbors, he spent a fair amount of time at neighbors' homes and also lived with another Elkhound. Rambo has done WELL with shelter staff. However, yesterday we did formal dog-to-dog testing with Rambo and it is clear that he should be an ONLY dog. Especially during feeding times, he does not do well in reaction to dogs in neighboring runs. The staff also feel that he would do best in an adults-only home as they worry that small children might venture near his food bowl during feeding time and suspect he might be protective of that. All this said, Rambo has been VERY loving with the adults at the shelter. He just soaks up attention. Before considering an Elkhound, please read about for what they were bred...hunting moose in Norway. Hence, they were bred to be independent, to solve problems, to hunt all day, etc. Those qualities do NOT a couch potato dog or lawn ornament dog make. These dogs require someone who will show good leadership, keep them mentally stimulated, give them lots of exercise and who will let them be part of their family. Rambo has LOTS of love and loyalty to give but needs JUST the right situation/person. An experienced "Elkie" owner with NO other dogs and an adults-only home would fit that bill!
The shelter does not have the ability to perform heartworm testing on-site. Deworming and/or vaccinations can be done on occasion when medication is available (we rely on donations for this). For reputable rescues, however, local volunteer assistance is available for transport to a local Vet clinic for such testing and to obtain appropriate vaccines and Health Certificate at the rescue's expense. In order to pull animals from Ashe County Animal Control, rescues must be approved. The approval process involves submitting an application, available by emailing a Friends of Ashe County Animals (FACA) volunteer at fabulousmcg@gmail.com. As part of the application, rescues will need to submit copies of their adoption application, adoption contract and 501c3. Rescues will also need to provide a Vet Reference. The Animal Control Officers prefer that all rescue-related inquiries be directed to the volunteer email (fabulousmcg@gmail.com) so please do not contact the shelter with rescue-related inquiries. An FACA volunteer will be checking this email daily so please allow 24 hours for a response. Shelter information: Ashe County Animal Control 767 Fred Pugh Road Crumpler, NC 28617 Shelter Hours: 10:00AM-2PM, MON/WED/FRI. They are closed to public on TU/TH/SAT/SUN.
