Here's what the humans have to say about me:
LEVI - FEMALE LAB BORDER COLLIE X, BORN AROUND EARLY NOV 2012 DOG, MEDIUM COAT BLACK W WHITE, CURLY TAIL, CURRENTLY APPROX 55 LBS
Here is an update from her foster home in Victoria: Levi is very loyal to her "people" but can be skittish with strangers. In her dog savvy foster home Levi is just a typical puppy, with a medium-high energy, a love to run around without a leash and who requires clear direction. We haven't heard her bark yet! Someone must have told her she was coming to doggy bootcamp and to mind her manners!
She is dog social though can be a little hesitant in meeting other dogs. She needs the chance to be a young dog and run with other young dogs multiple times a week, so will need a home that is committed to keeping her well socialized. She could be an only dog, or would love the opportunity to have a home with a good adult dog role model that will still play with her.
Levi came from a home where she was allowed to do anything she wanted and she became used to having little or no boundaries. She became a handful for her owners. In her foster home she follows a strict "Nothing in Life is Free" program, where EVERYTHING rewards based is monitored and thought-through for good manners. It sounds like a lot of work but isn't. Making sure she sits and waits for you to go first through the door, making sure she waits before she comes out of her crate, making sure she sits for her food bowl, making sure she has four paws on the floor before she's given anything and making sure she is in a relaxed state before giving much attention through touch are the fundamentals of such a program along with not allowing her to go anywhere with tension on the leash.
With steady practice, clear boundaries and consistency Levi is an AWESOME, loyal dog. She craves leadership, like in her picture, she maintains great eye contact and has a great want to follow -once she deems you're worth following. She is a submissive girl in general and is not suited to having the leadership position thrust on her. If it is again, she will again become spoiled.
She has been house-trained so far in her foster home and is learning loose leash walking. It's recommended that whoever adopts Levi continues with the routine at her foster home for the first few weeks in order to maintain consistency in rules in her life. Once the rules become the norm, you will find a dog who naturally makes the choice to be a well-behaved companion. It will be work for the first month or so, and then it will just become engrained, practiced behaviour.
Levi is currently being given 1 good walk, with no compromise on pulling on leash (all we do is stop and wait for her to find her way back, or move in the other direction so that she can't reward herself by getting closer to something SHE wants). Ideally some off-leash fun in a fenced backyard, or somewhere fenced and safe every day. Daycare or an off-leash dog pack walker once or twice a week would be very helpful for her. An opportunity to learn new things every day. Life skills trumping "commands". This will build more confidence in her.
Because of Levi's jumpy rudeness and skittishness with strangers, we are asking that her forever home have no kids under 13 years old and have had some dog experience before, preferably with a medium-high energy more stubborn type breed. A fenced in yard, or a strict plan in place for her exercise needs (daycare combined with daily hikes) is required. She truly needs minimum an hour a day to run free. Someone who wants to take her through any type of training -obedience, agility, rally-o, etc- is favored as any activity that works the mind will make her confidence soar.
Levi truly is a great dog, she is a big suck, loves nothing more than getting a butt-scratch from her favorite people, she is quite an easy keeper and has caught on to the rules very quickly in her foster home. She will turn into your shadow quickly, but she is a work in progress at a the same time and she will definitely test you in the first week or two of adoption to see if she can return to bratdom. You'll need to be able to look past her cute, silly antics and realize no matter how cute and silly she still needs rules, boundaries, consistency and clarity. When she has those, you can love on her all you want and she will love you back with all her heart.
Pets can be flown to new homes. Application and homecheck required for all homes, the dog will go to the best home for the dog.
