My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

We have just taken in an aquarium full of convict cichlid fish (also known as Zebra cichlids) which the owner could no longer care for...we have males and females, from young to adult. In the photo, you can see the males (the top fish) are larger and have larger cichlid "bumps" on their nose, while the females (the bottom fish) are smaller, more colorful and have a bright orange patch on their sides.

Convict cichlids are extremely hardy fish, that can survive and repopulate quickly under many conditions, though they prefer warmer water around 78 degrees, which is high in tannins since they are native to Central America, and on the soft side.

Convict cichlids are easily maintained and bred in an aquarium. They are freshwater fish and the aquarium should be decorated to mimic the natural environment and include rocks and artificial caves. Convict cichlids are omnivores that will eat underwater live plants as well as most commercial fish foods although they prefer commercial Cichlid pellets. Convict cichlids are aggressively territorial during breeding and pairs are best kept alone. Due to the species' tendency to dig, you need a really good filter. Their relatively small size (males get to be about 3-4", females about 2-3"), along with ease of keeping and breeding, make the convict an ideal cichlid for beginners and advanced aquarists alike.

We ask that if you are interested in adopting any of our cichlids that you fill out the adoption form on our website located at http://clintoncrittercare.com/?page_id=259
We are asking an adoption fee of $1 per fish. Thank you!
