My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Shizuka (shee-zoo-kah), which means "quiet" in Japanese, is a 2 year old pure bred Cream female Shiba Inu that our rescue pulled at a puppy mill auction in Missouri in February. Before coming to rescue, Shizuka had never once lived in a house, walked on grass, worn a collar or leash, gone for a walk, been petted by people or done anything our canine companions do on a regular basis. Puppy mills are large scale USDA licensed breeders that sell puppies via the internet or to pet stores. The dogs' sole purpose is to produce puppies. The adults are given extremely minimal care and are left in cages their entire lives, just shelling out puppies. These dogs come to us usually extremely shy and fearful of human touch and are easily startled by everyday noises, movements and interactions. Many have a hard time adjusting to walking on a leash because they panick when the collar or harness gets slightly tight on their bodies since they've never worn such things before. These dogs take patience and understanding to come out of their shells and some may never be what one would consider a "normal" dog.

While Shizuka still has a ways to go we feel she can continue the rest of her journey in a forever home. She is approaching her foster mom for pets and will nudge her hand if she stops. She definitely prefers women to men and would do best in a home without children as they scare her. She is good with dogs but doesn't know how to play with them at all. We would however like her to have another dog in the home if possible for her to learn the ropes from. She is also good with cats.

Shizuka is still working on crate training. She is quiet in her crate but doesn't always go in on her own. She is being fed in her crate to associate positive things with the crate. Shizu is also potty trained in the sense that she doesn't have accidents in the house but we wouldn't recommend leaving her loose in the home when not supervised as she doesn't yet know how to "ask", she just goes out when her foster parents make her do so.

Shizuka is still pretty terrified of walking on a leash so no apartments. She also gets spooked easily by loud noises and if this happens outside she will try to escape and has gotten out of her foster parents' yard twice. Because of this she needs 6 foot secure wood fencing in her forever home.

Shizuka's adoption fee is $350.00. It includes her spay, microchip, deworming, distemper and rabies vaccinations as well as a 6 week professional training couse at an approved local facility near the adopter.
