My story

Hambone is a 1-year-old, 19-pound male who appears to be the prototype of a hot new designer breed: the Chuggle—equal parts Pug, Beagle, and Chihuahua. His stature, curled tail, shortened muzzle, and wrinkled brow are pure Pug, his lean physique and athleticism are very Beagley, and his ridiculously oversized, active ears clearly derive from Chihuahua ancestry. Hambone’s ears reveal his most private thoughts and moods: slicked-back when engaged in casual banter, bat-like full extension (accompanied by twitching and satellite-dish rotation) when solving mysteries, and one-up-one-down when dozing. Hambone entered the Rescue favoring his front-right leg due to a recent injury, but it hardly slows him down. He’s a real eager beaver and optimistically pursues any people or dogs in the vicinity, always looking to playfully engage. Early indicators of recovery are promising, but the leg will be evaluated at Westlake Animal Hospital this coming week. From time to time, Hambone also likes to stroll around on his back two legs like it ain’t no thang, suggesting a previous career in the circus. He’s heartworm negative, neutered, crate-trained, and not a barker. He loves to gnaw on rawhides and the like—which led to his name—but shows the utmost respect for items that are off-limits and is quite sensitive to verbal commands for such a young lad.
