My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Conner! Conner is a 12 year old male GSD who has obviously had a very sad life. He was found curled up in the cormer of a barn, and laid there for 3 days before animal control was called. When they went out to pick him up, the poor baby was so weak he could barely walk.

Conner was ill with an upper respiratory infection, and extremely underweight. He is over that now, and his appetite is good, so we expect he'll put on some weight now that he's being fed regularly. Unfortunately, Conner's problems do not end there, though.

Conner has a pretty advanced case of heartworm disease, and would not physically be able to withstand the harsh chemicals necessary to treat this conditions. He has been put on monthly heartworm prevention to keep his infection from becoming any worse. His lungs are in pretty bad condition. He also has a very weak rear end, and drags his toes on the ground when he walks. His hips appear to be ok, so we suspect he is suffering from Degenerative Myelapothy, a genetic disease often seen in GSDs. There is no pain involved with DM, but as it progresses it slowly paralyzes the nerves in the spine and leads to immobility.

We do realize that with all his health problems, it is unlikely anyone will be willing to adopt Conner. And that's fine. He will live out his life in his rescue home should henot be adopted. But for anyone who has ever experienced the joy of a senior rescue, and had their life improved by sharing it with a dog who has probably never had a good day inhis life, Conner is the dog for you. It takes a very special person to open their heart andhome to a senior, but they repay you ten-fold for your kindness!

Please Click Here to fill out an application. This is the first step in our adoption process. No adoption will be considered or discussed until this has been completed and received.

Conner must go to an indoor home where he will be an important part of the family. We do not adopt to anyone under the age of 21.

Note: Mid-South Shepherd Rescue is a no-kill, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We do not have a shelter location. Our dogs are kept in foster homes as part of a family, to help prepare them for transition into their forever homes. If you are interested in meeting one of our dogs, please contact us by clicking on the email address to your right. We will be glad to make arrangements for a meeting.

WHY do we rescue? CLICK HERE to find out!

As of November 29, 2007, the balance on our vet bill is $5,534.62. This is JUST our primary vet bill, and does not include other daily expenses, as well as additional medical bills for some of our dogs who need to see specialists (for example, orthopedic surgeries). These costs are mounting daily, as we are always testing, spaying/neutering and heartworm treating new dogs as they come into rescue. Our adoption fee of $250 is the ONLY funding source we have, and it doesn't go very far when some of our rescues have bills of $1000+. Please help us continue to help them. Tax deductible donations an be made by clicking the following link, or by snail mail to:
MSSR, P.O. Box 542, Nesbit, MS 38651. NO amount is too small. If you think you can't make a difference, think again!
