My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

It is with a heavy heart that we’ve decided to re-home Bear, our beloved puppy dog.

Bear is a wonderful boy, but we have to be realistic. Bear is not a ‘family’ dog, and we’d like to have kids within the next few years. Bear is a reservation dog, who missed out on a lot of socialization at a young age, and has behaviours which we initially thought we could remedy when we first adopted Bear. Since we’ve had limited success in this area, we feel it best to find Bear an ‘adult-only’ home where he can be accepted for his beautiful self and have his behaviours managed safely. In short, Bear has dog aggression and is occasionally uncomfortable with some people as well.

We adopted Bear at the (estimated) age of 9 months. He was adorable, but within 3 days of the adoption, he started nipping at our friends that we invited over, and he started nipping at other dogs that we’d meet on leash during walks. We initially thought about returning Bear, but decided to work on it with the help of a friend who’s a highly qualified dog trainer. We initially had a lot of success with remedying his behaviour towards people, so Bear stayed. But we’ve had less success with Bear’s reactivity to other dogs, and we think this is a concern when around children.

Bear’s really been a great dog. He has come a long way and has learned so much! We’re hoping that Bear can find another home that will be a better fit for his personality and needs. Below I’ve listed some of Bears highlights, so you know exactly what you’re getting with this beautiful boy!

· Bear’s demeanor is calm, quiet, and polite. He doesn’t do much chewing, barking, jumping, or begging (unless encouraged to do so).
· Bear has strong obedience skills and is a very quick learner – he can sit, lay, stay, leave it, recall, roll-over, play dead, and target with his nose.
· Bear loves learning and we have enrolled him in over half a dozen classes, and twice as many private lessons. He loves mental stimulation! We’ve had him in rally obedience, tracking, and other behaviour oriented classes to help teach him a variety of skills.
· Bear is kennel trained.
· Bear LOVES his walks. He’s great on leash and gets 2 walks a day, rain or shine. He’s also a great jogger, and is well behaved around cyclists and other joggers – no chasing or jumping!
· Bear is good in the car. He has come with us on road trips and doesn’t have any issues with motion sicknesses. He’s also stayed with us in resorts and hotels. He’s been in elevators, and on the c-train.
· Bear’s favourite activities include smelling stuff, and being outside. He would stay outside all day long, lounging in the sun, if possible.
· Although independent, Bear needs companionship. He loves having his people around – if only to lay at your feet.

We love Bear very much and will be sad to see him go. But to summarize, we think Bear would do better in an adult only home, without other pets, with folks that want a companion by their side, and have lots of patience and time to spend with Bear, and of course, a GIANT Heart.
