Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Update Oct 26: Gertrude was adopted at the end of July, but unfortunately is returning to rescue. Her adoptors were looking for a dog who could act as a therapy dog for their teenage daughter. Though they bonded with her, they do not feel she has the working personality to be a therapy prospect. She will be returning to foster care this weekend, and will be once again be available for adoption. She does well with dogs and cats, and has lived with teenagers without issue. While not barky in foster care, in her adoptive home they reported she would bark in the yard and at strangers who would come into the home. They also report that she was weary with men. We will see how she does on return to foster care, and update her bio.
Update April 20: We've found a foster home for Gertrude! She is set to arrive in foster care today, where she will be vaccinated, spayed and checked over by our vet, then will be available for adoption.
As we slowly worked our way down to the last stall on the left, where a barky hound cross and a black lab sat, I avoided looking at the tri-coloured hound. She was the only dog who sounded like she was barking meanly, and I knew in a situation where authorities are ordering the quick removal of 150-200 dogs from a property and many have already been put down, that any aggression issue would be a death sentence. What a surprise when we finally got to her and followed her caretaker in to find that her barks were a big show, and she was very sweet with both of us new strangers.
Gertrude is one of a small number on the property who had names, and she suits it. She looks pretty beaten down, with some residual signs of flea allergies, and dirty from living in a stall in a barn. She looks like that hound dog that belongs on the cartoon of the front porch of the cabin in the deep South. She is loud, so no apartments or thin-walled townhouses. This may change if she gets the chance to become a family pet. She is good with her roommate Alice, though they reportedly had a dust-up since we were there which landed Gertrude a wound on her face. She is now spending her days in a small crate. Needless to say, we'd really like to get her out and start transitioning her to life as a pet. She is in danger of being given to whoever will take her for whatever purpose as authorities have ordered removal of the dogs by March. Being one of the most beat down looking dogs on the property, I doubt anyone would want her, which would leave her with animal control, which would probably mean euthanasia.
Gertrude is friendly with people, especially those she knows - but she does bark at people she doesn't - at least from her stall. She was not aggressive with us at all. She is probably best matched to be in a multi-dog home, but I'm not sure about cats - we'll have to assess, but she is a little intense so I see her best matched with other dogs. I'd like to spend more time with her before making an evaluation of her with children - not because she did anything that concerned us, but because she did bark at us more intently from inside her stall, so did have an alert response to strangers.
Gertrude is urgently in need of a foster home in order for us to take her in. She is a very likeable dog, but she's not a dog that most people will look twice at. If you are interested in the dog that nobody else wants - here she is.
