Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Herald is a 3 year old former research beagle who, after retirement, has spent the past few months in the teaching program at Becker College helping students in the Animal Science programs learn the fine art of animal care. He is an empathetic, intuitive and intelligent boy who would make a great companion for someone looking to have a deep and special bond with their canine counterpart!
Herald really enjoys playing with the other beagles at school and he has a great balance of play and "hangout" time - he is respectful of his pals when they decide they need to take a break from running to eat some grass and explore! He is also very fond of toys, especially if there are treats in them - he loves to nudge and roll them around to extract the goodies inside!
At school, Herald participates in clicker-training (a method of positive reinforcement, relationship-based training) to help him learn about the world and practice skills that will help him adjust to life in his new home. During his sessions, he is soft-eyed, yet focused and attentive - Herald has the most adorable, "serious face" when he's intensely concentrating during training! Although it may take him a few tries, Herald is very willing to please and has a great determination to learn. Herald and his student trainer are currently practicing his leash-walking (something he has never done before coming to school) and also working on building his confidence on-leash. He is a very smart boy and is doing very well in his training, but will need some extra guidance and support to face new challenges in his home life. Herald is truly a handsome, charming and lovable guy and will be a devoted companion for many years to come!
In general, retired research beagles are really the most loveable animals - very gentle, good-natured and happy little dogs! Because they are handled quite a bit in their past lives and as teaching animals at Becker, they are all very people-oriented and friendly. They tend to adjust quite well when they are adopted, but have never lived in a home before and need time to get used to living in such a new environment. However, given some guidance and TLC to feel secure, they warm up and make loyal, grateful and playful pets!
We want potential applicants to understand that Herald is currently working on housebreaking. He had never been outside prior to coming to Becker, and he is just getting used to the fact that he can eliminate outdoors. Herald has also attempted to urine mark in our on-campus training apartment - he has been introduced to a "belly band" at school to help manage this behavior, and this may be a helpful tool to use at home. Herald is bound to pick up new routines quickly, but his progress will depend on a consistent schedule, clear guidelines and encouragement as he learns "house rules," so we do require that his new owners commit to crate-training. We would be happy to discuss the process of crate-training in more depth if you do decide that you might like to adopt.
It is also worth noting that Herald is not suited to be off-leash, on tie-outs or contained with electric fences - he is very naïve about the world and could be easily startled or frightened away from home. We do not require adopters to have fenced-in yards, but we do want applicants to be committed to using a leash, directly supervising all outdoor time and keeping Herald safe and secure!
We are taking applications for Herald now and he will be ready to go home in December. Our adoption fee is $125 and our dogs leave up-to-date on vaccinations, neutered, microchipped and on monthly heartworm, and flea and tick preventive. For more information about adopting Herald, please contact Lisa at Becker College at lisa.chase@becker.edu.
