Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Meet Moose! Our 3-legged wonder boy! Moose is a stunning male chocolate lab. He is about 1 1/2 years old, neutered, fully vetted and vaccinated. Moose was a termite sniffing dog, and worked for a pest control company until he injured his left hind paw. His owner did not take him to the vet for treatment until much after the injury, and by the time he finally did, the hind leg had to be amputated. Moose's owner did not want an "imperfect" dog, so left him to be euthanized.
Moose was far too sweet and wonderful a dog to put to sleep over something as trivial as having only three legs. He recovered beautifully and is now as strong and agile as ever, running long distances with the other dogs in our rescue. He has no idea that he has one less leg than they do!
Moose has a wonderful character, friendly and loving to everyone and everydog. He is a typical goofy, mushy labrador, giving wet, slobbery licks, and hoping to climb into your lap. Moose has good basic obedience, and our trainer raves about his trainability. We don't know much about his termite sniffing days, but Moose has a solid sit, down, off, and short stay. He rides beautifully in the car, hopping in and out on his own. Moose is great off leash, and comes back reliably when called. He walks on leash, but can pull-when we aren't training him we use a Gentle Leader, and he walks beautifully with it. Moose fetches, loves a game of tug, and loves to play with and tear apart toys. He loves to chew, so should be closely supervised in a home situation until he learns what are "his" toys and what are not. We give him daily rawhide chews and stuffed Kongs to direct his chewing.
Moose shares his toys with anyone-dog or human. He is crate trained and sleeps happily in his crate at night. We think he is house trained-he has not made any errors inside during the daytime, however, the dogs have free access to the outside. He has not slept inside a home at night since coming into our rescue, so we are unsure if he would make a mistake at night. We recommend either crating him or setting him up in a dog-proof room at night at first.
If you are interested in adopting Moose, please fill in the application. We will be happy to send a full file on Moose should you want more information. Moose is currently in Guatemala, scheduled to fly to San Francisco mid December.
