Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Azumi (ah-zoo-mee), which means "safe residence" in Japanese, is a 4 1/2 year old pure bred Black and Tan female Shiba Inu that we pulled from a puppy mill in late April. Before coming into rescue she had never been on grass, never worn a harness or walked on a leash, never been inside of a house. While still very shy with people, she has made some substantial progress and we feel that she deserves to continue her journey in a forever home.
Azumi, who is actually affectionately nicknamed "Penny" by her foster parents, does not yet inteact much with people and would prefer a quiet home that will allow her to come out of her shell in her own time. Children make her nervous so no kids please. She is great with other dogs and is learning to run around the backyard in her foster home and play with. We would ask that there be another well rounded, friendly, but not super hyper, dog in the house that can be her companion and show her the ropes. She is also good with cats.
Azumi will go into her crate for her meals but currently sleeps out of the crate in her foster parents' bedroom near the other dogs. It would be beneficial in her new home to probably have two crates to start, one in the living area and one in the bedroom. I would recommend she be fed 2x a day, each time in a crate; one time at bedtime in the crate in the bedroom and one time when people leave the house in the crate in the living room. Azumi can also be trusted loose in the house around 4-6 hours with no accidents but in a new environment she may digress so I would start with crating and work her slowly out of the crates as needed.
We understand that adopting a dog like Azumi/"Penny" is more of a selfless act, as her interactions with people are few and far between, but we are sure the right person is out there. Recommended reading for Azumi would be Help for Your Fearful Dog by Nicole Wilde.
Azumi's adoption fee is $275.00 which includes her spay, surgical dental, microchip, deworming, distemper vaccination and a private training session with the Director Beki Myers, an accredited Dog Training Instructor.
