My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

CARLIN - MALE COLLIE/SHEPHERD X BORN NOV 3/11

Carlin was adopted by a family back in April of 2012. We initially heard reports that Carlin was settling in well with the family and with their existing dog (a 9 year old) but since then things started to become unworkable for them. Carlin and the other dog were not getting along and the family could not find a resolution. The family said that Carlin wasn’t aggressive dog in any other sense and that he had always interacted well with other dogs and never had any issue with any dog except the other dog in the family. His family said that Carlin has hip issues and that his exercise is more frequent and less intense than he might otherwise have and that for his age, he's a relatively low-energy dog and doesn't seem to require a lot of high-energy workouts to be content and happy.

Carlin is currently fostered on the Island and his foster home reports that he rides well in the car although was nervous on the first trip home from the ferry. He relaxed into their home quickly. They also report that…

He came to motocross with me yesterday and couldn't have behaved better. He responded calmly to over 200 riders on large, noisy motorbikes (I was working the Finish line) and was only sad when I had to leave for 15 minutes to take my spot and race. At motocross he exhibited hesitation with adult males. Young males weren't a problem (he is disinterested). However my friend Derek, who is 250 pounds, stooped down to Carlin's level and the two bonded immediately. I'm hoping more exposure to adult men with great dog kinship will help Carlin get over his nervousness. He was slightly anxious when I left him to race, he cried for a while but fell asleep after a few minutes. At home, he follows me everywhere - to the bathroom, to the bedroom, to the kitchen. Today and this week will be excellent for him to get used to being alone. When he gets used to the routine of walks and ball every two hours throughout the work day, I think that he will be even more comfortable.

Carlin definitely favors his hip although it's difficult to notice. He doesn't like jumping over objects, such as a trailer hitch, and as noted - was nervous about jumping into the car the first time. He runs like a horse with other dogs for lengthy periods of time, so I will assume no pain in running/walking.

He does not pull on the leash when walking, and is vocal when he needs something (such as bathroom). Carlin is not yet good at coming to owner on call when off the leash and will need more training. He does not run, but does not understand the urgency of come when called.

He waits for food and is very eager to please.

Carlin is excellent with other dogs. Small dogs: he plays very well, pins down but does not bite. Is respectful of other dog's cries if pinning isn't enjoyed. Does not over play or annoy - waits for other dogs' cues to initiate play. With big dogs: he plays very well. With old dogs he does not initiate play, approaches big dogs slowly. He loves people; at the current, not so great with adult males (especially loud, low voices).

Pets can be flown to new homes. Application and homecheck required for all homes, the dog will go to the best home for the dog.
