Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Homer is 26 lbs, gray and white, and incredibly smart. We think he is a standard schnauzer with DNA along the lines of the original schnauzer breed. He looks identical to the dog in my encyclopedia of dogs book, under standard schnauzer, but his weight and size are slightly smaller. Standard schnauzer weight is in the range of 32-34 pounds, so Homer may be a mix of a standard and a mini. The vet is guessing his age at 3-5 years old, but it is really hard to tell; his teeth are really nice and clean but you can see some wear. He has been groomed and looks very handsome in his traditional schnauzer hairdo.
This dog is incredible! He talks to his foster mom, which is really comical, and he tries hard to be the boss. So he will need an owner who is a strong but gentle alpha who understands the schnauzer personality; this way he will feel safe and be respectful. He has bonded very well with his foster mom. At the shelter he barked like crazy when his foster mom entered the kennel. She reached down unintimidated and put the collar on him. He didn't quite know what to think, but quickly decided that she was OK and at least he might get a nice walk out of the experience. :) When we approached the truck he got excited and was very happy to be leaving the shelter. In the truck he took position in the back seat standing on the front center console with his front paws watching every move. He was ecstatic and just gave kisses and more kisses! It was a sight to be seen. This is definitely the up-side to doing dog rescue, when you get a dog that openly appreciates you. After that he was loyal and obedient to his foster mom, and this is how we expect him to bond to his new owner. He will be loyal and follow cues well when taught correctly, firmly but gently.
Homer has a bilateral hernia that will not be repaired because the vet feels it isn't necessary. It is an old injury, and the opening in the body sidewall is large enough that it won't be pinched off. You don't really notice it unless it's brought to your attention, so he doesn't look funny or odd. It is just one of those things that is better off being left alone.
This guy is special and will make a fantastic buddy on hikes, playing in the yard, or just on your lap.
All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, vet checked, current on vaccinations, microchipped, groomed, de-wormed, de-flea'd, and come with a collar, leash, ID tag, and puppy kisses from the lucky dog you take home!
If you are interested in meeting and possibly adopting Homer, the first step is to submit an adoption application. Please go to our website www.k9bestfriendsforever.com and click on "Adopt" which will take you to our online application form. HOMER IS BEING FOSTERED IN ROSEVILLE.
