My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Update – October 14, 2012: Not only can you take the dog out of the farm, you can also take the farm out of the dog! Just a few short months ago, Poochie and her brother Axel came to us after having lived their entire lives as outdoor farm dogs. They had had little socialization with humans and were shy and sometimes fearful of new people and experiences. Both were extremely sweet dogs, but they needed time to adjust to the major lifestyle changes that they were experiencing.

Today, Poochie and Axel are new dogs. They are crate trained and have learned good recall. They also have very nice leash manners, so though a fenced yard is preferred for them, they could also be happy with regular walks.

Axel and Poochie have learned that being around humans is a pretty terrific thing, and they are far more relaxed when meeting new people. They are both good with children and love to be around their humans. Poochie, who was the shyer of the two dogs, has learned that people are the source of lots of great things and it is definitely okay to trust them!

These two beautiful Collies do not need to be adopted together, though if you are looking for a ready made Collie pack, you couldn't do better than these two sweeties.

Poochie came to MWCR with her BFF Axel as an owner surrender. She has lived her entire life as an outdoor dog and is very shy and fearful of strangers and unfamiliar situations. She is a truly beautiful girl, but her coat was very dry and matted when she first arrived at MWCR. Her foster mom has been grooming her – something which is obviously new to Poochie – and in no time at all, quality food and an indoor lifestyle will restore her coat to its full glory.

Poochie is more fearful than her friend Axel, and she takes longer to warm up to strangers and to feel comfortable. Loud, unfamiliar noises such as the vacuum cleaner send her running for her kennel. She doesn't know basic commands, but she does know her name and will come when called. She is house trained and will bark to let her family know that she wants to go outside. Her foster family is trying to teach her to walk on a leash, but fear of strangers and strange places makes her very timid once she is outside of her fenced yard. Inside the yard, she is a happy, playful girl. She definitely presents a flight risk if something frightens her, so it is imperative that her forever home should have a fenced yard. She will not jump into or out of a car, but once inside, she rides well.

Poochie loves playing with the other dogs at her foster home, and like her friend Axel, she is amused by the little resident Yorkie, often trying to nudge it around like some sort of fluffy chew toy. Her former owner indicated that she should not live with cats and she does have an unhealthy interest in the neighbor's cat when it is near the fence. It is possible that she could learn to respect a dog savvy, fully clawed cat, but it would probably be best if her forever home was a feline-free zone. Because she is so shy, she would be happiest in either an adult home or one that included older, quiet children.

Although Poochie enjoys her friend Axel, the two dogs do not need to be adopted together. However, she would love to have another dog to play with, and having a canine companion might help her to adapt and to develop confidence in unfamiliar situations. She is a very sweet girl who loves giving and receiving affection, once she gets to know someone and feel comfortable. She will make a wonderful companion for anyone who will take the time to teach her that the big scary world outside of her home and yard is a pretty friendly place after all.
