Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Just a touching little story to share with you guys about Butterball, our newest dog addition to the rescue family.
Butterball had been at a high kill shelter for a while waiting for a new home to no avail. He had been turned in by his previous owners who had him since he was a pup, they said they couldn't take care of him any longer. Butterball had been an outside dog his whole life.
We go to a clinic that's directly next door to the animal shelter and the staff of the clinic couldn't stop raving about how sweet Butterball was. He had been there for a while and his life depended on how many dogs were surrendered to the shelter each day. Once the shelter runs out of room, they start putting dogs to sleep. We decided we would pull him and give him a good chance at life. A second one anyways.
Most people don't know what I or the Vice President of ESP look like, but we're both very petite ladies. Butterball was so scared after getting out of the shelter, he decided to put his brakes on and refused to walk to our car. We ended up having to carry him (97 lbs of dog) over and lift him onto my car seat. He didn't know who he was with or what was happening to him so needless to say, Butterball was petrified. We were in Fredericksburg and decided that we would try and brighten his mood and take him to the river. When we got there, we pulled him out of the car and after a long while coaxed him to the shore. I walked into the water with him right behind me.
Suddenly, Butterball completely changed. His tailed actually wagged for the first time and off he went swimming all through the water, He was undoubtedly a better swimmer than both of us and after a short while he got this huge grin on his face. One that showed us he was actually happy. We snapped a picture of it.
From that very moment Butterball has been nothing but a complete doll. We really can't put into words how awesome he is, he has everyone at ESP swooning over him. He follows his foster mom around everywhere and even heels well when walking off leash. He knows is name and has so far gotten his sit and lay down commands down to a tee. Butterball would be great for someone looking for a mellow dog that still enjoys outdoor activities. He's very loyal and needs an owner to please and be affectionate towards. He's not a crazy and hyper lab. He does seem to have mild separation anxiety which was easily dealt with by placing him in a foster with another dog. He's perfect when alone with another dog rather than just by himself, so we're looking to find him a family with another dog. Unfortunately, the shelter doesn't let their dogs out to potty but rather lets them urinate and defecate in their runs and then just cleans the mess up. Butterball initially had a few accidents but is now on a good potty schedule and uses the restroom outside. It's probably the first time in his life that he's been potty trained so prospective owners have to know that he may have a few more accidents before he's completely trained. We've only had him for a few days so far and he's really coming along great on potty training. He's a young guy, only about 3. Gets along with dogs and cats, is a great listener, and is very smart. We of course, will have him neutered, his vaccinations, micro-chipped and examined.
