Check out our sister brand, Kinship, for vet chat, a nutrition calculator, basic obedience training, and (much) more. So you're never flying solo in this pet parenting thing.

Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Shelby is a 5 year old black and tan female dachshund with just a touch of silver dappling. She and her daughter were signed over by a family who stated that they needed to get rid of the dogs because "they ran out the front door and got away all the time" and also that they "made messes in the house". Shelby had received all her current vet work by the owner, with the exception of microchipping, which was taken care of by our rescue program.
Shelby is an absolutely delightful dog! She's friendly, outgoing and gets along beautifully with the other dachshunds in her foster home. Everyone at the vet clinic doted on Shelby and thought she was just a great little dog, and so do we! She likes to play with toys, go for walks and generally enjoys life--especially now that she is receiving the attention and love she deserves.
Shelby loves snuggling with people on the couch, so plan on giving her plenty of "couch time". She sleeps nicely in a crate in her foster family's bedroom, but would really prefer to sleep in the "Big Bed"!
Be aware that Shelby IS an accomplished escape artist. She requires a home where she would have excellent outside supervision, as she is able to find the weak point in any fence. Her access to doors must be restricted so as to minimize the possibility of her bolting outside. She is quite opportunistic and can quickly dart out an open door when you least expect it. Once Shelby is loose outside, she runs fast and far, which is dangerous both for herself and for those who must chase and retrieve her. Shelby would do best in a household that has strategically placed baby/doggie gates restricting her access to doors, and/or a minimal number of people coming and going.
The owner originally purchased Shelby from a pet store, so she originated from a puppy mill, as those are the only breeders who supply pet stores. Unfortunately, the owner, like so many people did not understand this. The owner, despite showing good responsibility for getting vet work done on this dog, failed at the most important responsibility of all--which is to understand that a dog is your responsibility for its lifetime-- and not something to "get rid of" when it is no longer fun or convenient.
We're glad we were to be help this dog so she didn't end up dying in a shelter, which was where the owner would have taken her if a rescue group did not accept her.
Is this happy girl the one for you? Can you give Shelby a loving, permanent home with lots of attention?
