Here's what the humans have to say about me:
All HSWA dogs are in foster homes and need an appointment to be seen. Please call 205-554-0011 or email humaneswa@yahoo.com to request an appointment to see the dog/puppy and to check availability. Before choosing a pet, we recommend meeting the pet or ask questions first.
The heart of this Dixie is ready to open up and love one lucky family!
This beautiful lady is Dixie, a gorgeous 3-year-old female German Shepherd/Husky mix. She has a gorgeous thick blonde coat. Dixie isn't as big as a typical German Shepherd because she weighs only 32 pounds! Poor Dixie had been on her own as a stray for many, many months and we feel she had been deserted. She was being fed by a good HSWA friend/supporter over in Alberta. We don't believe she was displaced due to the 4-27-11 tornado here in Tuscaloosa. Animal Control was finally able to catch her, but she was not doing well down at our local shelter. She was scared to death and just curled up at the end of her kennel all day. So she was slated to be put down. We had heard about her and knew to look for her, so we pulled her out just in time.
Dixie is a very sweet dog -- not an aggressive bone in her body. But due to being abandoned or possibly even mistreated by humans, she can come off as very shy and skittish. She will need lots of patience and TLC to help build up her confidence and teach her to be more social. But we truly believe it will be well worth it. She will need a quiet and rather calm home with no young children to keep her stress level down. Dixie will chase cats, so she would not do well in a home with cats. She would get along with other dogs in the home as long as they are rather mild. Dixie will require a fenced-in yard because she will roam off-leash. Dixie might be okay in an apartment, but will need some daily exercising and must be on a leash anytime she goes outside. We are working with her to build more confidence and trust, as well as trying some basic training with her. Dixie is up to date on her vet care, spayed and is heartworm negative. She is on heartworm and flea/tick prevention. If you have the time, patience and love to help this sweet pup blossom, please come meet her and see what a great dog she can be.
Our adoption fee is $75. Read more information on our adoption process. Then, if you feel your home might be the right forever home and you would like to adopt a dog, submit an adoption application or email us at humaneswa@yahoo.com for more info.
