My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Ipo means "sweetheart" in Hawaiian, and it describes this darling girl perfectly! She loves people, comes quickly to the call of her name, and stays nearby if one has her outside. Whenever you talk to her, she looks at you and wags her tail. She gets along well with other dogs and children, and people who meet her exclaim, "What a nice dog!"

Unfortunately, she had mammary tumors that had to be removed surgically before she could be adopted. In dogs, half of mammary tumors are benign and half are malignant; benign ones can become malignant, so whichever they are, they must be removed.

Poor Ipo needed radical mastectomies on both sides to give her a chance to enjoy a good life. Sadly, this didn't have to happen -- spaying Ipo when she was young would've prevented the tumors in the first place. This is one of the reasons spaying female dogs is so important for their health.

Update: May 8, 2012 Ipo's surgery went very well! The surgeon was able to remove all of the tumors completely. Because the surgery was so extensive, Ipo spent 2 nights in the hospital on pain medications. This happy girl bounced back quickly in her foster home, where her tail was soon wagging, and her foster dad found it a challenge to keep her quiet! :-)

Miraculous news!! ALL of the tumors were benign!!! Ipo will be able to enjoy a happy, normal life!

Will you help us save Ipo's life? Ipo was recently adopted, but our volunteers are still struggling to pay her vet bills. BARK is a small, all-volunteer rescue organization. All of our work is done by a small group of dedicated volunteers. We depend entirely on adoption fees and donations. BARK is a 501c3 organization -- donations are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.
