We don't know Shasta's history prior to arriving at the shelter, but we're pretty sure it was less than ideal. Maybe she was used by a backyard breeder to produce beautiful puppies, maybe she was mistreated, maybe she was dumped somewhere when her former owners decided they didn't want her anymore -- or maybe all of the above. When we first met Shasta, she was sitting quietly in the corner of the shelter kennel, and she was absolutely terrified. It took quite a bit of coaxing, but we finally convinced her that -- maybe just maybe -- coming with us was better than staying at the shelter.
Shasta is about 1-2 years old and weighs 12 pounds. Her hair was very dirty, tangled and matted, so I'm sure she feels much better now in her cute short summer cut. She's a beautiful girl, and she will be gorgeous in a couple months when her hair grows back.
This little girl has already started coming out of her shell. It is truly an inspiration to see how much progress can be made in a short time with just love and kindness.
Shasta gives lots and lots of kisses -- I think she's been saving them up for a long time! She's so happy to see me, but she still freezes when I reach out to pet her, so we're doing lots of gentle petting so she can learn that no one will ever hurt her again. She is learning what it's like to be held in someone's arms, and she loves it; she wants to be as close as possible and, of course, kiss kiss kiss! She has recently discovered toys; she is having so much fun with them and collecting as many as she can :) Shasta is gaining more confidence and improving every day.
When Shasta gets really scared, or if she feels cornered, she gets nippy (but has never bitten anyone). She has not been nippy in her foster home, but just to be on the safe side we are recommending a home with no small children.
Shasta is a young dog, and I'm sure that once she understands that she is a loved and cherished family member, she will be the happy, playful, and devoted little pup she was always meant to be.
All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, vet checked, current on vaccinations, microchipped, groomed, de-wormed, de-flea'd, and come with a collar, leash, ID tag, and puppy kisses from the lucky dog you take home!
