Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Read more about me here: http://www.mwcr.org/2012/tobi.htm
For humans the death of a loved one brings grief and loss; but for a dog, such a tragedy may also bring homelessness. That is what happened to Tobi when her owner passed away and no other family member was able to take her. She was surrendered to MWCR and is now adapting to a whole new life at her foster home.
Prior to coming to MWCR, Tobi lived as an outdoor dog on a farm, so acclimating to life as an indoor dog has been a new challenge for her. She is a smart, eager-to-please girl, however, and is quickly getting the hang of the indoor lifestyle. She is working hard on her house training and is making great progress if taken outside regularly. Tobi hates being crated, so when her foster mom goes to work, she leaves her closed in a bedroom which seems to work well. She doesn't like going up and down stairs, though she can navigate a few steps without difficulty.
Tobi is a calm, gentle girl who loves to be petted and gets along well with everyone she meets, including kids as young as five. She does not jump up on people and is not a high energy dog, so she would be a great companion for gentle, respectful children. She is very loving with her people and likes to snuggle on the couch with her foster mom while they enjoy a good movie. Even though she relishes attention, she is not pushy about it and understands that she can't always be the center of attention.
Tobi has shown signs of some stiffness or pain in her back legs which might be early signs of arthritis. She is being evaluated for this and we will have more information once that evaluation is complete. She is also taking medication to treat some minor, urinary leakage.
Tobi's foster home does not include cats, so we cannot say for certain whether she would get along with kitties. She is a quiet, laid back girl, so it is probable that she would just ignore those of the feline persuasion. She is a bit bossy with other dogs and tends to bully the resident female dog at her foster home, but with some training she is learning to accept her place in the pack. She would love being an only dog, though if she is given time to adjust, she could learn to live in harmony with another dog.
Tobi knows the basic commands of “sit” and “down” and she has good recall. She needs more work on her leash walking skills and if she is pulled, she will simply sit down and refuse to move. She is making progress, however, and with patience, her forever home should be able to teach her to walk nicely on her leash. She won't willingly jump into a car, but once she is in, she settles down and rides well. She isn't a chatty dog, though she does bark at the lawn mower and at fast moving people or objects.
Tobi's ideal home would be a fairly quiet one where she could settle in and lavish her people with love and affection. She probably doesn't need a fenced yard as long as she is supervised outdoors and doesn't live in an active, high traffic area. She would prefer to be an only dog, but could adapt to a canine companion. Having lost her home once, Tobi is looking forward to finding a forever home that she can share with the people she loves best.
