Biography:
Homer is a total rockstar!
In the home he is housetrained, loves having and using a doggie door, he’s mindful, does not chew on anything that doesn’t belong to him, is compliant and like to learn, especially if it involves a treat for a reward. In two days he learned “sit”, “stay”, “down” and to not rush the door when you come and go. He does not bark and whine for more than a minute when you leave. There have been no neighbor complaints about his barking while I’m away at work. He is learning “drop it” and “come” very quickly. On walks he is doing well with the Halti gentle leader leash. He can be left alone without crating (and actually does better without crating), sleeps though the night and quickly becomes loyal, protective and responsive to love and the “calm-assertive” owner demeanor. They key to Homer is building trust and going slowly so he can adjust comfortably. Homer is not an apartment dog. He is a true German shepherd who needs space, a purpose and love.
What Homer needs to continue being a happy, calm, well-adjusted dog is:
•An owner who understands and wants a German shepherd and has the time and physical capacity to spend with him. Homer is a perfect match for the right owner. He has typical German shepherd needs and no behavior/personality quirks like being stubborn or doing the stare-down. He wants to please and be rewarded for good behavior.
•Exercise, discipline, affection – he is very responsive to “Ceaser’s Way”
•30-45 minute walks 2-3 x day – he loves rugged terrain
•A medium to large backyard with a doggie door
•Chew toys – a Kong with almond butter stuffed in it or an antler will keep him busy for a long time. His favorite toy is a tennis ball with a rope through it.
•Routine – however he shows comfort with change, but catches on to a routine quickly
•He seems ok with kids – he has had limited exposure and with a leash on. I think his ideal setting is a lot of land with one-owner and a job to do, however with the right owner, he’ll thrive regardless.
What Homer needs help with:
•Meeting new people and animals – he does well away from the house, on the trail and in the store with steady assurance that “it’s ok”. At home he has territorial/owner protection tendencies - he will mind, but he hasn’t gotten it yet that when the owner allows a person or animal into the house he can relax. With consistent training, I have no doubt that he can overcome this.
When you meet him at the Austin Animal Center, take him away from the hub-bub and play Frisbee in the long play area or outside the Center into a grassy area. Then you will see how he really is. He needs to be met in a calm setting with minimal distractions. If you want to introduce him to you kiddos, do it calmly. Take him for a walk with everyone and go slow. Do the introductions when you have established yourself as the pack-leader. Use a gentle leader leash so you can have maximum non-stressful control.
