Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Look for more about me here: http://www.mwcr.org/2012/cody-2012.htm
This is Cody, the claustrophobic Collie. Okay, he's not really claustrophobic, but after having lived his entire life as an outdoor dog, the idea of being confined or closed in is very scary for him. He came to MWCR from a farm environment where he lived until his owner died. His first few days at his foster home were extremely confusing for him, and initially he wanted to stay in the garage, with access to the fenced yard. Finally, after five days, the outdoor heat and a growing trust in his foster mom prompted him to give the house a try. Once he experienced the air conditioning and a nice soft rug, he was hooked!
Cody adapted very quickly to the indoor lifestyle and has been a model house guest. He is fully house trained when taken outside regularly, and his foster family can give him the run of the house without any fear of destructive behavior. He doesn't chew, has no separation anxiety and even ignores food that is left on the kitchen counters. His fear of confinement means that he should not be crated, but since he is so well behaved, there is really no need to do so.
Cody gets along well with everyone he meets. He is currently living with children ranging in age from 8 to 15 years old, but he is so gentle that he would probably be good with even very young children, since he doesn't jump up and is very laid back. He gets along nicely with the resident Collie and will join in some brief play sessions. He is also friendly with the resident cat and has shown no interest chasing the kitty. He loves all humans but is particularly fond of the ladies.
Cody is a big boy who could really stand to lose a few pounds. His foster family has him on a diet and he has lost some weight, but at roughly 95 pounds, his forever family will need to continue to keep him on his doggie weight watchers program. Ideally, it would be good for him to take regular walks, but he has a real fear of being on a leash. Even though he trusts his foster family, he will not allow them to walk him on a lead. If his forever home is in a quiet rural area, he would probably be fine walking with his people without a leash, since he has shown no interest in wandering off.
Cody knows his name and will usually come when called. He is an extremely quiet Collie who virtually never barks – even when the resident Collie invites him to join in. He rides well in the car though he needs help getting in. He tolerates brushing and bathing, and he has learned to how to go up and down stairs. After five years of living outdoors, Cody has definitely decided that the indoor lifestyle is the one for him.
This gentle boy will make a calm, loving addition to almost any home. He will need a fenced yard where he can wander around and get some much needed exercise, and he would enjoy having another laid back canine companion to hang out with. He will also need a forever family that will help him continue his quest toward a healthy weight and one that will work with him to overcome his fear of the dreaded leash. Cody is an easy going boy who loves everyone: cats, kids, other dogs and adults. He has a big heart to match his big body and is ready to give it to his new, forever family.
