Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Let me tell you a little bit about Rocky. Rocky is an EXTRAORDINARY dog. I am torn even as I write this, but I am doing it because he deserves the very best situation he can possibly be given. Over the past few years I've fostered many dogs for Cold Noses, Warm Hearts. This is the first dog I've written a testimonial for.
Rocky is extremely intelligent, sensitive, devoted, adoring and trainable. He is submissive and will choose you over all other people and animals once he realizes you are his. But it will take him a while to get there.
Many of the greatest dogs get overlooked in favor of a little stinker that is much "cuter." I'm not saying Rocky is not cute -- far from it! I now think he is one of the cutest dogs ever created! But that was not my first impression of him. And as the weeks go by I see that is not the first impression others gather of him. He can initially come off as distracted and gruff because he believes in his little heart that he has no time for you. Or he is afraid because "his mommy" is not there, so he growls and is not at all friendly. He not only doesn't realize that he is not "interviewing well," he feels that he has already found his rightful home so why are you wasting his time.
I tell him every night that he can't stay but he doesn't listen. His ears are back, he is stretched out on my lap and his eyes are filled with love. He will follow me to the ends of the earth!
The problem is this: I cannot keep him. I already have two dogs in a very small house. Keeping him as a third will challenge my relations with my family and I promised before fostering that I would not cave in and keep a third dog.
I firmly believe that Rocky will move on from me, but the right person needs to give him time and a chance. The rescue tells me that just over a month ago, he only knew solitude in a backyard in Bakersfield with two other dogs and likely little human contact. He is now house trained, walks on a leash, and has become adjusted to a variety of sounds and experiences. He did not know the sounds of skateboards, motorcycles, cars, trucks, vacuum cleaners, blenders and even a television set. He has learned to sit when told and also to wait for his food
He has come to love and accept my family (two dogs, two teenage kids) and no longer cries with fear when I leave the house. While my other dogs bark at strangers and chase raccoons, skunks and cats off the property at all hours, Rocky always stays close to my side whenever I am home.
Rocky is a companion dog that would love an owner who will take him lots of places. Unlike my other dogs, this is a dog that is well behaved when he is out with you. All he wants is to be by your side or in your arms. He is curious about the world, but only if you are with him. He will politely but unenthusiastically accept strangers but might growl or even bark at a man with a hat or someone moving unpredictably. He is not overly protective, he is very submissive, but he frightens easily and looks to you to look out for him. With time and exposure to the world, I believe that he will adapt and adjust, just as he has to his "new life" in our home.
Please stop by Cold Noses, Warm Hearts Rescue at The Little Dog House Groomers in Goleta to meet Rocky but do not judge his personality by your first meeting. With Rocky, you will win him over with time, love, patience and more patience. But the reward will far outweigh any challenges. This is a rare dog. Are you the person who is able to see past the first impression? If so, you can also email coldnosesrescue@gmail.com or call 895-1728.
